Genesis 6

The Earth Grows Corrupt

1 When men began to grow numerous on the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whichever ones they chose. 3 And the Lord God said, “My Spirit will certainly not remain in these men forever, because they are flesh. Their days will be 120 years.” 4 Now the giants were on the earth in those days — and afterward too, when the sons of God went in to the daughters of men and the women bore them children. Those were the giants of old, the men of renown.

5 And the Lord God saw that the wicked deeds of men had multiplied on the earth, and that every one of them, in his heart, was intently brooding over evil continually, 6 and God took it to heart that he had made man on the earth, and he pondered it deeply. 7 And God said, “I will wipe out man, whom I made, from the face of the earth — man and cattle alike, and the creeping things, and the birds of the sky — for I am grieved that I made them.” 8 But Noah found favor before the Lord God.

Noah and the Ark

9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, perfect in his generation; Noah was well-pleasing to God. 10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 But the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with wrongdoing. 12 The Lord God looked at the earth, and it was corrupt, because all flesh had corrupted its way on the earth.

13 And God said to Noah, “The time of all mankind has come before me, because the earth has been filled with their wrongdoing — and look, I am going to destroy them, and the earth with them. 14 So make yourself an ark of square timber. Build the ark with compartments, and coat it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make the ark: 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. 16 Build the ark so that it narrows as it rises, and finish it to 18 inches from the top. Put the door of the ark in its side, and make it with lower, second, and third decks.

17 “And look — I am bringing a flood of water on the earth, to destroy all flesh under heaven that has the breath of life in it. Everything on the earth will die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark — you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of all the cattle, all the creeping things, and all the wild beasts — of all flesh — you are to bring pairs of every kind into the ark, so you can keep them fed along with yourself. They are to be male and female. 20 Of all the winged birds after their kind, all the cattle after their kind, and all the creeping things that creep on the earth after their kind, pairs of them all will come in to you, male and female, to be fed with you. 21 And take with you every kind of food that you eat, and gather it to yourself; it will be food for you and for them.”

22 And Noah did everything the Lord God commanded him — exactly so.
