Tobit 10

Counting the Days in Nineveh

1 Now Tobit his father was counting each day; and when the days of the journey were filled and they did not come, 2 he said, “Have they been put to shame? Or has Gabael died, and there is no one to give him the money?” 3 And he was very grieved.

4 And his wife said to him, “The child has perished, because he has stayed away so long.” And she began to wail for him, and said, 5 “Do I not care, child, that I let you go — you, the light of my eyes?” 6 And Tobit said to her, “Be quiet. Do not trouble yourself. He is well.” 7 And she said to him, “Be quiet yourself. Do not deceive me — my child has perished.” And day after day she would go out to the road he had gone away by, and by day she ate no bread, and through the nights she never left off wailing for Tobias her son, until the fourteen days of the wedding were finished, which Raguel had sworn he would spend there.

Tobias Asks to Go Home

8 Then Tobias said to Raguel, “Send me away, for my father and my mother no longer hope to see me.” 9 But his father-in-law said to him, “Stay with me, and I will send word to your father, and they will tell him how things stand with you.” And Tobias said, “No — send me away to my father.”

10 So Raguel got up and gave him Sarah his wife and half of what he had — slaves and cattle and silver; 11 and he blessed them and sent them away, saying, “The God of heaven will prosper you, children, before I die.”

The Parting at Ecbatana

12 And he said to his daughter, “Honor your parents-in-law. They are your parents now. May I hear a good report of you.” And he kissed her. 13 And Edna said to Tobias, “Beloved brother, may the Lord of heaven bring you home again, and may he grant me to see your children by Sarah my daughter, so that I may be glad before the Lord. And look — I put my daughter into your hands as a thing left in trust. Do not grieve her.”

14 After this Tobias went on his way, blessing God because he had prospered his journey; and he blessed Raguel and Edna his wife.
