Nehemiah 3

The Sheep Gate and the Fish Gate

1 Then Eliashib the high priest rose up, and his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate. They made it holy and set up its doors; and as far as the Tower of the Hundred they made it holy, as far as the Tower of Hananel. 2 And next to them built the sons of the men of Jericho, and next to them the sons of Zaccur son of Imri. 3 And the sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate. They roofed it and set up its doors and its bolts and its bars.

4 And next to them Meremoth son of Uriah son of Hakkoz took his place; and next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah son of Meshezabel took his place; and next to them Zadok son of Baanah took his place. 5 And next to them the Tekoites took their place; but their nobles did not put their necks to the service. 6 And Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah repaired the Old Gate. They roofed it and set up its doors and its bolts and its bars.

8 And next to them Hananiah son of the perfumer made repairs, and they left Jerusalem as far as the broad wall. 9 And next to them Rephaiah, ruler of half the district around Jerusalem, made repairs. 10 And next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs, opposite his own house; and next to him Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs. 11 And Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-moab repaired a second portion, as far as the Tower of the Ovens. 12 And next to him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of half the district around Jerusalem, made repairs — he and his daughters.

Around the City, Family by Family

13 Hanun and the people living in Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate. They built it and set up its doors and its bolts and its bars, and fifteen hundred feet of the wall as far as the Dung Gate. 14 And Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem, repaired the Dung Gate, he and his sons; and they covered it and set up its doors and its bolts and its bars. 15 and the wall of the Pool of the Fleeces at the king’s shearing place, and as far as the steps that go down from the city of David.

16 After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of half the district of Beth-zur, made repairs, as far as the garden of David’s tomb, and as far as the pool that was made, and as far as the house of the mighty men. 17 After him the Levites made repairs — Rehum son of Bani. Next to him Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his own district. 18 And after him their brothers made repairs — Binnui son of Henadad, ruler of half the district of Keilah. 19 And next to him Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired a second portion, at the tower of the ascent where it meets the corner.

20 After him Baruch son of Zabbai repaired a second portion, from the corner as far as the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21 After him Meremoth son of Uriah son of Hakkoz repaired a second portion, from the door of the house of Eliashib to the end of the house of Eliashib. 22 And after him the priests made repairs, the men of the plain. 23 And after him Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs, opposite their own house. After him Azariah son of Maaseiah son of Hananiah made repairs, beside his own house.

24 After him Binnui son of Henadad repaired a second portion, from the house of Azariah as far as the corner and to the turning, 25 of Palal son of Uzai, opposite the corner; and there is the tower that juts out from the king’s house, the upper one, of the court of the guard. And after him, Pedaiah son of Parosh. 26 And the temple servants were living in Ophel, as far as the garden of the Water Gate toward the east, and the tower that juts out. 27 After him the Tekoites repaired a second portion, opposite the great tower that juts out, and as far as the wall of Ophel.

28 Above the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each man opposite his own house. 29 After him Zadok son of Immer made repairs, opposite his own house. And after him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, keeper of the East Gate, made repairs. 30 After him Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired a second portion. After him Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs, opposite his own treasury. 31 After him Malchijah son of the goldsmith made repairs, as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Muster Gate, and as far as the ascent at the turning. 32 And between the ascent and the Sheep Gate the smiths and the merchants made repairs.

Sanballat and Tobiah Mock the Work

33 Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, it was evil in his eyes, and he was very angry, and he mocked the Jews. 34 And he said before his brothers, “This is the force of Samaria — that these Jews are rebuilding their own city?” 35 And Tobiah the Ammonite came up beside him, and they said to one another, “Will they sacrifice, or eat, in their own place? Will a fox not go up and pull down their wall of stones?”

36 “Hear, our God, for we have become a thing to sneer at. Turn their reproach back on their own head, and give them over to sneering in a land of captivity, 37 and do not cover over their lawlessness.”
