Genesis
Genesis 50
The Burial of Jacob
1 And Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him, and kissed him. 2 Then Joseph commanded his servants the embalmers to embalm his father — and the embalmers embalmed Israel. 3 They completed forty days for him, for so the days of embalming are counted. And Egypt mourned him seventy days. 4 When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph spoke to the officials of Pharaoh: “If I have found favor in your sight, speak for me in the ears of Pharaoh, and say: 5 ‘My father put me under oath, saying, Bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan. Now then, let me go up and bury my father — and I will return.’” 6 And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.” 7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 and all Joseph’s household, and his brothers, and all his father’s house. Their kindred, with the sheep and the oxen, they left behind in the land of Goshen. 9 Chariots and horsemen went up with him too — a very great company. 10 And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, and there they mourned him with a great and very bitter lamentation. And he kept a mourning for his father seven days. 11 When the people living in the land of Canaan saw the mourning at the floor of Atad, they said, “This is a great mourning for the Egyptians.” That is why the place across the Jordan was named The Mourning of Egypt. 12 So his sons did for him just as he had commanded, and buried him there: 13 his sons carried him up into the land of Canaan and buried him in the double cave facing Mamre — the cave Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial holding. 14 And Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
“You Meant Evil — God Meant Good”
15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds our evil against us, and pays us back in full for all the evil we did to him?” 16 So they came to Joseph and said, “Your father charged us before his death: 17 ‘Say this to Joseph — Forgive them their injustice and their sin, for they did you evil.’ So now, pardon the injustice of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept as they spoke to him. 18 Then they came to him themselves and said, “Here we are — we are your servants.” 19 And Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid — for I belong to God. 20 You took counsel against me for evil, but God took counsel for me for good — to bring about what stands today: that a great people might be kept alive and fed. 21 Do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your families.” And he comforted them, and spoke to their hearts.
The Death of Joseph
22 So Joseph lived on in Egypt, he and his brothers and all his father’s family. And Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. 23 Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation, and the sons of Machir, Manasseh’s son, were born on Joseph’s knees. 24 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am dying. But God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land God swore to our fathers — to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” 25 And Joseph put the sons of Israel under oath: “When God visits you, as he surely will — carry my bones up from here with you.” 26 And Joseph died, a hundred and ten years old. And they buried him, and laid him in a coffin, in Egypt.
