2 Chronicles
2 Chronicles 22
The Youngest Son Is Made King
1 And the people living in Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his place, because the band of raiders that had come against them — the Arabians and the Amazons — had killed all the older ones. So Ahaziah son of Joram king of Judah reigned. 2 Ahaziah was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah, daughter of Omri.
3 And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor to sin; 4 and he did what was evil before the Lord, as the house of Ahab did, for after his father died they were his counselors, to destroy him.
He Goes Down to Jezreel
5 And he walked in their counsels. And he went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead; and the archers struck Joram. 6 And Joram went back to be healed in Jezreel of the blows the Arameans struck him with at Ramoth, when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. And Ahaziah son of Joram, king of Judah, went down to see Joram son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was ill. 7 And Ahaziah’s downfall came from God, in his going to Joram. For when he had come, Joram went out with him to Jehu son of Nimshi, the Lord’s anointed one against the house of Ahab.
8 And when Jehu was taking vengeance on the house of Ahab, he found the rulers of Judah and the brothers of Ahaziah serving Ahaziah, and he killed them. 9 And he gave the order to seek out Ahaziah; and they caught him while he was being healed in Samaria, and they brought him to Jehu, and he killed him. And they buried him, for they said, “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought out the Lord with all his heart.” And there was no one in the house of Ahaziah to hold power firm over the kingdom.
Athaliah, and the Child in the House of God
10 And Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, and she rose up and destroyed the whole royal line in the house of Judah. 11 But Jehoshabeath the daughter of the king took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him out from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and she put him and his nurse in the room where the beds were kept. So Jehoshabeath, daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, wife of Jehoiada the priest, hid him — she hid him from the face of Athaliah, and she did not kill him. 12 And he stayed with her, hidden in the house of God, six years; and Athaliah was reigning over the land.
