2 Chronicles 19

A Prophet Meets the King Coming Home

1 And Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned to his house in peace, to Jerusalem. 2 And Jehu son of Hanani the prophet went out to meet him and said to him, “King Jehoshaphat, do you help a sinner, or make a friend of a man the Lord hates? Because of this, wrath has come on you from the Lord. 3 Yet good words were found in you, for you took the sacred groves away from the land of Judah and set your heart to seek out the Lord.”

He Goes Out Among the People Again

4 And Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem. And he went out again among the people, from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, and turned them back to the Lord, the God of their fathers. 5 And he appointed judges in all the strong cities of Judah, city by city.

What He Told the Judges

6 And he said to the judges, “Look to what you are doing. You do not judge for a man but for the Lord, and the words of judgment are with you. 7 And now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Be watchful, and act; for with the Lord our God there is no wrongdoing, and no taking account of who a man is, and no taking of bribes.”

A Court Set Up in Jerusalem

8 In Jerusalem too Jehoshaphat appointed some of the priests and the Levites and the heads of families of Israel, for the judgment of the Lord and to judge those living in Jerusalem. 9 And he charged them, saying, “This is how you are to act, in the fear of the Lord, in truth and with a full heart. 10 Any judgment that comes to you from your brothers who live in their cities — between blood and blood, between decree and command, and rules and judgments — you are to make plain to them, and they will not sin against the Lord, and there will be no wrath on you and on your brothers. Do it this way, and you will not sin. 11 And see, Amariah the priest is your leader in every matter of the Lord, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael is the leader of the house of Judah in every matter of the king; and the scribes and the Levites are before you. Be strong and act, and the Lord will be with the good.”
