2 Chronicles 17

Jehoshaphat Takes His Father’s Place

1 And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and Jehoshaphat grew strong against Israel. 2 And he put a force in all the strong cities of Judah, and he appointed leaders in all the cities of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had taken.

3 And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, for he walked in the first ways of his father, and he did not seek out the idols; 4 but he sought out the Lord, the God of his father, and he walked in the commands of his father, and not according to the works of Israel. 5 And the Lord kept the kingdom straight in his hand, and all Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat; and he had great wealth and glory. 6 And his heart was lifted high in the way of the Lord; and he further took away the high places and the sacred groves from the land of Judah.

Teachers Go Through the Cities of Judah

7 And in the third year of his reign he sent out his leaders and the sons of the mighty men — Obadiah and Zechariah and Nethanel and Micaiah — to teach in the cities of Judah, 8 and with them the Levites: Shemaiah and Nethaniah and Zebadiah and Asiel and Shemiramoth and Jonathan and Adonijah and Tobijah, the Levites; and with them Elishama and Joram, the priests. 9 And they taught in Judah, and the book of the law of the Lord was with them; and they went through the cities of Judah and taught the people.

The Nations Around Keep Their Distance

10 And a terror of the Lord came on all the kingdoms of the land around Judah, and they did not make war against Jehoshaphat. 11 And some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts, and silver, and presents; and the Arabians brought him rams from the flocks — seven thousand seven hundred.

12 And Jehoshaphat went on growing greater and greater, up to a height; and he built dwellings in Judea, and strong cities. 13 And he had many works in Judea; and in Jerusalem were fighting men, mighty and strong.

The Muster, House by House

14 And this is their number, by the houses of their fathers. Of Judah, commanders of thousands: Adnah the leader, and with him mighty men of strength, three hundred thousand; 15 and after him Johanan the leader, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand; 16 and after him Amasiah son of Zichri, who gave himself willingly to the Lord, and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of strength.

17 And out of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of strength, and with him two hundred thousand archers and men with the light shield; 18 and after him Jehozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand mighty men of war. 19 These were the ones serving the king, besides those whom the king put in the strong cities in all Judea.
