2 Chronicles 16

Asa Sends the Treasure to Damascus

1 In the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and built up Ramah, so that no one could go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. 2 And Asa took gold and silver out of the treasuries of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house, and sent them to the son of Hadad, king of Aram, who lived in Damascus, saying, 3 “Make a covenant between me and you, and between my father and your father. Look, I have sent you gold and silver. Come and drive Baasha king of Israel away from me, so that he leaves me alone.”

4 And the son of Hadad listened to King Asa, and sent the commanders of his army against the cities of Israel, and struck Ijon and Dan and Abel-maim and all the country around Naphtali. 5 And when Baasha heard it, he left off building Ramah and stopped his work. 6 Then King Asa took all Judah, and took the stones of Ramah and its timber, with which Baasha had built, and he built Geba and Mizpah with them.

Hanani the Prophet Comes to Asa

7 And at that time Hanani the prophet came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, “Because you trusted in the king of Aram, and did not trust in the Lord your God, the army of Aram has been saved out of your hand. 8 Were not the Ethiopians and the Libyans a great force — in courage, in horsemen, in very great numbers? And when you trusted in the Lord, he handed them over into your hands. 9 For the eyes of the Lord look over all the earth, to give strength to every heart that is full toward him. In this you have acted in ignorance; from now on there will be war with you.”

10 And Asa was angry at the prophet and put him in prison, for he was enraged at this; and Asa did harm among the people at that time.

The Last Years of Asa

11 And the acts of Asa, the first and the last, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12 And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became diseased in his feet, until he was very ill; and in his sickness he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians. 13 And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the thirty-ninth year of his reign. 14 And they buried him in the tomb that he had dug for himself in the city of David, and they laid him on the bed, and filled it with spices and with kinds of perfume made by the perfumers, and they made him a very great funeral procession.
