2 Chronicles
2 Chronicles 14
Asa Tears Down the Shrines
1 And he did what was good and right before the Lord his God. 2 He took away the altars of the foreign gods, and the high places, and he broke the pillars in pieces and cut down the sacred groves. 3 And he told Judah to seek out the Lord, the God of their fathers, and to carry out the law and the commands. 4 And he took away the altars and the idols out of all the cities of Judah; and there was peace.
Quiet Years, and Cities with Walls
5 There were walled cities in the land of Judah, for the land was at peace; and he had no war in those years, because the Lord gave him rest. 6 And he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities, and make walls and towers, gates and bars, while we are masters of the land. For as we have sought out the Lord our God, he has sought us out, and has given us rest on every side, and has made us prosper.”
7 And Asa had an army of men bearing arms — the tall shield and the spear — in the land of Judah, three hundred thousand; and in the land of Benjamin, men with the light shield and the bow, two hundred and fifty thousand. All these were mighty warriors.
Zerah the Ethiopian Comes Up
8 And Zerah the Ethiopian went out against them with an army — a million men and three hundred chariots — and he came as far as Mareshah. 9 And Asa went out to meet him and drew up his line of battle in the valley north of Mareshah.
10 And Asa cried out to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, it is not impossible for you to save by many or by few. Make us strong, Lord our God, for we have put our trust in you, and in your name we have come out against this great multitude. Lord our God, let no man be strong against you.”
11 And the Lord struck the Ethiopians before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled; 12 and Asa and his people pursued them as far as Gedor. And the Ethiopians fell, so that none of them survived, for they were broken in pieces before the Lord and before his army; and they carried off much spoil.
13 And they cut down their villages all around Gedor, for the terror of the Lord came upon them; and they plundered all their cities, for much spoil fell to them. 14 They also cut down the tents of the herds — the Amazons — and they took away many sheep and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.
