2 Chronicles 12

Egypt Comes Up Against Jerusalem

1 And when the kingdom of Rehoboam was set firm, and when it had grown strong, he abandoned the commands of the Lord, and all Israel with him. 2 And in the fifth year of the reign of Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had sinned before the Lord, 3 with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horses; and there was no counting the crowd that came with him out of Egypt — Libyans, Troglodytes and Ethiopians. 4 And they took the fortified cities that were in Judah, and he came to Jerusalem.

The Word That Came to Shemaiah

5 And Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the rulers of Judah, who had gathered into Jerusalem away from Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: You have abandoned me, and I too will abandon you into the hand of Shishak.” 6 And the rulers of Israel and the king were put to shame, and they said, “The Lord is righteous.”

7 And when the Lord saw that they were ashamed, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, “They are ashamed. I will not destroy them; I will grant them rescue for a little while, and my wrath will not pour down on Jerusalem. 8 For they will be servants, and they will know my service and the service of the kingdom of the earth.”

The Gold Shields Are Carried Off

9 And Shishak king of Egypt came up, and he took the treasures that were in the house of the Lord and the treasures that were in the king’s house. He took it all. And he took the gold shields that Solomon had made, 10 and Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place. And Shishak set over him commanders of the runners, the men who guarded the king’s gateway. 11 And whenever the king went into the house of the Lord, the guards went in, and the runners, and those who came back to meet the runners. 12 And when he was ashamed, the anger of the Lord turned away from him, and it did not go on to destroy him completely; and indeed there were good things in Judah.

The Years of Rehoboam

13 And king Rehoboam grew strong in Jerusalem, and he reigned. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, in the city that the Lord chose out of all the tribes of the children of Israel, for his name to be there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite. 14 And he did what was evil, for he did not set his heart to seek out the Lord.

15 And the acts of Rehoboam, the first and the last — are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer, and his deeds? And Rehoboam made war on Jeroboam all his days. 16 And Rehoboam died, and he was buried with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David; and Abijah his son reigned in his place.
