1 Chronicles 29
David Puts His Own Gold Before the Assembly
1 And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, the one whom the Lord has chosen, is young and tender, and the work is great; for the building is not for a man, but for the Lord God. 2 With all my strength I have made ready for the house of my God gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, soom stones and stones for setting, and costly and many-colored stones, and every precious stone, and a great deal of Parian marble. 3 And further, because I take pleasure in the house of my God, there is gold and silver of my own that I have got for myself, and see — I have given it to the house of my God, to raise it high, besides all that I have made ready for the house of the holy things: 4 about 112½ tons of gold, gold of Ophir, and about 262½ tons of tested silver, to overlay the walls of the temple with them, 5 by the hand of craftsmen. And who is willing to fill his hands today for the Lord?”
The People Give Willingly
6 And the leaders of the fathers’ houses gave willingly, and the leaders of the sons of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, and those set over the works, and the stewards of the king; 7 and they gave for the works of the house of the Lord about 187½ tons of gold, and ten thousand gold pieces, and about 375 tons of silver, and about 675 tons of bronze, and about 3,750 tons of iron. 8 And those among whom stone was found gave it into the treasuries of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jeiel the Gershonite. 9 And the people rejoiced at their willingness, for they gave willingly to the Lord with a full heart; and David the king rejoiced greatly.
David Blesses the Lord Before Them All
10 And David the king blessed the Lord before the assembly, and said, “Blessed are you, Lord, God of Israel our Father, from everlasting and to everlasting. 11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the boast and the victory and the strength; for you are master of all that is in heaven and on the earth. Before your face every king and every nation is shaken. 12 From you come wealth and glory. You rule over all, Lord, ruler of every rule; and in your hand are strength and dominion, and it is in your hand, Almighty, to make all things great and to make them strong. 13 And now, Lord, we give you thanks, and we praise the name that is your boast.
14 And who am I, and who are my people, that we had the strength to give so willingly to you? For all things are yours, and out of what is yours we have given to you. 15 For we are foreigners before you, and we live here as foreigners, as all our fathers did. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no staying. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that I have made ready for a house to be built to your holy name — it is from your hand, and all of it is yours. 17 And I know, Lord, that you are the one who examines hearts, and that you love righteousness. In singleness of heart I have given all these things willingly; and now I have seen your people, the ones found here, giving willingly to you with joy.
18 Lord, the God of Abraham and Isaac and Israel our fathers, keep these things in the thought of the heart of your people forever, and set their hearts straight toward you. 19 And to Solomon my son give a good heart to do your commands and your witnesses and your decrees, and to bring the building of your house to its end.”
Solomon Is Made King a Second Time
20 And David said to the whole assembly, “Bless the Lord your God.” And the whole assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, and they bent their knees and bowed down to the Lord and to the king. 21 And David sacrificed sacrifices to the Lord and brought up whole burnt offerings to God on the day after the first day: a thousand young bulls, a thousand rams, a thousand lambs, and their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with joy. And they made Solomon son of David king a second time, and anointed him to the Lord as king, and Zadok to the priesthood.
23 And Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and he was well pleasing, and all Israel listened to him. 24 The leaders and the mighty men and all the sons of King David his father were made subject to him. 25 And the Lord made Solomon great, high above, in the sight of all Israel, and gave him the glory of a king, such as was on no king before him.
The Days of David Are Ended
26 And David son of Jesse reigned over Israel 27 forty years: seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 28 And he died in a good old age, full of days, in wealth and glory; and Solomon his son reigned in his place.
29 And the rest of the acts of King David, the earlier and the later, are written in the records of Samuel the seer, and in the records of Nathan the prophet, and in the records of Gad the seer, 30 concerning all his reign and his power, and the times that came over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the earth.
