The Twelve Divisions, Month by Month

1 Now the sons of Israel, by their number: the leaders of families, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, and the scribes who served the people and every matter of the king, by divisions — for every matter of coming in and going out, month by month, through all the months of the year. One division was twenty-four thousand.

2 And over the first division, for the first month, was Jesboam son of Zabdiel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 3 He was from the sons of Perez, commander over all the commanders of the army for the first month. 4 And over the division of the second month was Dodia the Ahohite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand, commanders of the army.

5 The third, for the third month, was Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the priest, the leader; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 6 This Benaiah was mightier than the thirty, and he was over the thirty; and over his division was Amizabath his son. 7 The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zabdias his son, and his brothers; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 8 The fifth, for the fifth month, was the leader Shammoth the Jezraite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

9 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Oduias son of Ekkes the Tekoite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 10 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helles of Phallous, of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 11 The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sobochai the Isathite, of Zerah; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

12 The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer from Anathoth, of the land of Benjamin; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 13 The tenth, for the tenth month, was Meera the Netophathite, of Zerah; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 14 The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah of Pharathon, of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 15 The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Choldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The Leaders of the Tribes

16 And over the tribes of Israel: for Reuben, the leader was Eliezer son of Zichri; for Simeon, Shephatiah son of Maacah; 17 for Levi, Hashabiah son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok; 18 for Judah, Eliab, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri son of Michael; 19 for Zebulun, Shemaiah son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jerimoth son of Esriel;

20 for Ephraim, Hoshea son of Uzziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah; 21 for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Jaddai son of Zabdias; for the sons of Benjamin, Asiel son of Abner; 22 for Dan, Azarael son of Joram. These were the heads of families of the tribes of Israel.

23 But David did not take their number from twenty years old and under, because the Lord had said that he would multiply Israel like the stars of heaven. 24 And Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the people and did not finish; and wrath came on Israel because of this, and the number was not entered in the book of the daily record of King David.

The Men Over the King’s Property

25 And over the king’s treasuries was Azmoth son of Odiel; and over the treasuries in the country and in the villages and in the settlements and in the towers was Jonathan son of Uzziah. 26 And over those who farmed the land, the men who worked it, was Esdri son of Cholub. 27 And over the fields was Shimei from Ramah; and over the stores of wine in the fields was Zichri son of Sephni. 28 And over the olive groves and the sycamores in the lowland was Balanas the Gedorite; and over the stores of oil was Joash.

29 And over the oxen pasturing in Asidon was Satrais the Saronite; and over the oxen in the valleys was Sophat son of Adli. 30 And over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite; and over the donkeys was Jadias from Merathon. 31 And over the sheep was Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were in charge of the property of King David.

The King’s Counselors

32 And Jonathan, David’s uncle on his father’s side, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and he was a scribe; and Jeiel son of Achamani was with the king’s sons. 33 And Ahithophel was the king’s counselor; and Hushai was the king’s first friend. 34 And after this Ahithophel came Jehoiada son of Benaiah, and Abiathar; and Joab was the commander of the king’s army.
