1 Chronicles 18

David Strikes the Nations Around Him

1 After this David struck the Philistines and routed them, and he took Gath and its villages out of the hand of the Philistines. 2 And he struck Moab, and the Moabites became servants to David, bringing gifts.

3 And David struck Hadadezer king of Zobah of Hamath, as he was going to set his hand on the river Euphrates. 4 David seized from them a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horses, and twenty thousand men on foot. And David disabled all the chariots, and kept back a hundred chariots of them. 5 And Aram of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, and David struck down twenty-two thousand men of the Arameans. 6 And David set a garrison in Aram, in the part by Damascus, and they became servants to David, bringing gifts. And the Lord saved David wherever he went.

7 And David took the gold collars that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 And out of Metabechas, and out of the choice cities of Hadadezer, David took a very great weight of bronze. With it Solomon made the bronze sea, and the pillars, and the bronze vessels.

Toi of Hamath Sends His Son

9 And Toi king of Hamath heard that David had struck down the whole army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10 and he sent Iduram his son to King David, to ask him how he fared and to bless him for making war on Hadadezer and striking him down, for Toi was a man at war with Hadadezer — and all the vessels of silver and gold. 11 These King David made holy to the Lord, together with the silver and the gold that he took from all the nations — from Edom, and Moab, and from the sons of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

12 And Abishai son of Zeruiah struck the Edomites in the valley of salt — eighteen thousand of them, 13 and he set garrisons in the valley; and all the Edomites became servants of David. And the Lord saved David wherever he went.

The Men Who Served the King

14 So David reigned over all Israel, and he did judgment and righteousness for all his people. 15 And Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was keeper of the records; 16 and Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests, and Susa was the scribe; 17 and Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were the king’s chief deputies.
