1 Chronicles 13

David Puts It to the Whole Assembly

1 And David took counsel with the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, with every leader, 2 and David said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If this seems good to you, and if the Lord our God makes it go well, let us send to our brothers who are left in all the land of Israel, and with them to the priests, the Levites, in the cities of their possession, and let them be gathered to us, 3 and let us bring the ark of our God over to us; for they did not seek it out from the days of Saul.” 4 And the whole assembly said to do so, for the word was right in the eyes of all the people.

5 So David gathered all Israel together, from the borders of Egypt as far as the entrance of Hamath, to bring in the ark of God from the city of Jarim. 6 And David brought it up, and all Israel went up to the city of David, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who sits on the cherubim, on which his name is called.

7 And they set the ark of God on a new wagon, out of the house of Abinadab; and Uzzah and his brothers were driving the wagon. 8 And David and all Israel were playing before God with all their strength — with singers, and with lyres, and with harps, with hand-drums, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.

The Breach at the Threshing Floor

9 And they came as far as the threshing floor, and Uzzah reached out his hand to hold the ark, because the young bull had pulled it aside. 10 And the Lord was very angry with Uzzah, and struck him down there, because he reached out his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.

11 And David was in low spirits, because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah with a breach; and he called that place the Breach of Uzzah, to this day. 12 And David was afraid of God that day, and said, “How am I to bring the ark of God in to myself?”

13 And David did not take the ark back to himself, into the city of David; and he turned it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14 And the ark of God stayed in the house of Obed-edom three months; and God blessed Obed-edom and everything that was his.
