1 Chronicles 10
The Last Battle on Gilboa
1 The Philistines fought against Israel, and Israel fled before the Philistines, and they fell wounded on Mount Gilboa. 2 And the Philistines pursued hard after Saul and after his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. 3 And the battle bore down hard on Saul, and the archers found him with bows and pains, and he suffered from the bows.
4 And Saul said to the man who carried his weapons, “Draw your sword and run me through with it, before these uncircumcised men come and make sport of me.” But the man who carried his weapons would not, because he was very afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. 5 And when the man who carried his weapons saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died. 6 So Saul died, and his three sons on that day, and all his house died together.
They Strip the Dead
7 And every man of Israel who was in the valley saw that Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, and they left their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and settled in them. 8 The next day the Philistines came to strip the dead, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 And they stripped him and took his head and his weapons, and sent them around the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to their idols and to the people. 10 And they put his weapons in the house of their god, and his head they put in the house of Dagon.
The Men of Gilead Bury Them
11 And all who lived in Gilead heard everything the Philistines had done to Saul and to Israel. 12 And every man of strength rose up out of Gilead, and they took the body of Saul and the body of his sons and brought them to Jabesh, and they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
Why Saul Died
13 So Saul died in his lawless deeds, by which he acted lawlessly against the Lord, against the word of the Lord, because he did not keep it; and because Saul inquired of one who consults the dead, to seek counsel, and Samuel the prophet answered him. 14 And he did not seek the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
