1 Chronicles 6

1 The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. [a] 2 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei. 3 The sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. 4 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. And these are the families of Levi, family by family.

5 Of Gershon: Libni his son, Jeeth his son, Zimmah his son, 6 Joah his son, Addi his son, Zerah his son, Jethri his son. [b]

7 The sons of Kohath: Amminadab his son, Korah his son, Assir his son, 8 Elkanah his son, and Abiasaph his son, Assir his son, 9 Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, Shaul his son.

10 And the sons of Elkanah: Amasai and Ahimoth, 11 Elkanah his son, Suphi his son, and Nahath his son, [c] 12 Eliab his son, Idaer his son, Elkanah his son. [d] 13 The sons of Samuel: the firstborn Sani, and Abijah. [e]

14 The sons of Merari: Mahli; Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son, 15 Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, Asaiah his son.

16 And these are the men whom David set over the singers in the house of the Lord, once the ark had come to its rest; 17 and they were doing the work of the service before the tent of the house of witness, with instruments, until Solomon built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem; and they took their place at their service according to the judgment laid down for them.

18 And these are the men who stood there, and their sons, from the sons of Kohath: Heman the singer, son of Joel, son of Samuel, 19 son of Elkanah, son of Edad, son of Eliel, son of Thie, [f] 20 son of Suph, son of Elkanah, son of Meth, son of Amasiah, 21 son of Elkanah, son of Joel, son of Azariah, son of Zephaniah, 22 son of Tahath, son of Assir, son of Abiasaph, son of Korah, 23 son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, son of Israel.

24 And his brother Asaph, who stood at his right hand: Asaph son of Berechiah, son of Shimea, 25 son of Michael, son of Maasiah, son of Malchijah, 26 son of Athani, son of Zarai, son of Adaiah, 27 son of Ethan, son of Zimmah, son of Shimei, 28 son of Echa, son of Gershon, son of Levi. [g]

29 And the sons of Merari their brother, on the left hand: Ethan son of Kisai, son of Abdi, son of Maloch, 30 son of Hashabiah, son of Amaziah, son of Hilkiah, [h] 31 son of Amasai, son of Bani, son of Shemer, 32 son of Mahli, son of Mushi, son of Merari, son of Levi.

33 And their brothers, by the houses of their families — the Levites — were given for all the work of the service of the tent of the house of God. 34 And Aaron and his sons burned incense on the altar of whole burnt offerings and on the altar of incense, for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to everything that Moses the servant of God had commanded. 35 And these are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son, 36 Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son, 37 Mariel his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son, 38 Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son.

39 And these are their settlements, in their villages, within their borders, given to the sons of Aaron, to the family of the Kohathites — for the lot fell to them — 40 and they gave them Hebron in the land of Judah, and its open land all around it; 41 but the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh.

42 And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge: Hebron, and Libnah with its open land, and Selna with its open land, and Eshtemoa with its open land, 43 and Jethar with its open land, and Debir with its open land, 44 and Ashan with its open land, and Attan with its open land, and Beth-shemesh with its open land; [j] 45 and from the tribe of Benjamin, Geba with its open land, and Galemeth with its open land, and Anchoch with its open land. All their cities were thirteen cities, family by family. [k]

46 And to the rest of the sons of Kohath, from their families, there were given out of the tribe — out of the half-tribe of Manasseh — ten cities by lot. 47 And to the sons of Gershon, family by family, out of the tribe of Issachar, out of the tribe of Asher, out of the tribe of Naphtali and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. 48 And to the sons of Merari, family by family, out of the tribe of Reuben, out of the tribe of Gad and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities by lot.

49 So the sons of Israel gave the Levites the cities with their open land; 50 and they gave by lot, out of the tribe of the sons of Judah and out of the tribe of the sons of Simeon, these cities, which he called by name. [l] 51 And to some of the families of the sons of Kohath there came cities within their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim.

52 And they gave him the cities of refuge: Shechem with its open land, in the hill country of Ephraim, and Gezer with its open land, 53 and Jekmaam with its open land, and Beth-horon with its open land, 54 and Eglam with its open land, and Gath-rimmon with its open land; [m] 55 and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Anar with its open land and Ibleam with its open land, family by family, to the rest of the sons of Kohath.

56 To the sons of Gershon, from the families of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan with its open land, and Aseroth with its open land; [n] 57 and out of the tribe of Issachar, Kedesh with its open land and Daberath with its open land, 58 and Dabor with its open land and Anam with its open land; [o]

59 and out of the tribe of Asher, Masal with its open land and Abaran with its open land, [p] 60 and Ikak with its open land and Rehob with its open land; 61 and out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its open land, and Chamoth with its open land, and Kiriathaim with its open land.

62 To the rest of the sons of Merari, out of the tribe of Zebulun: Rimmon with its open land and Tachchiah with its open land; [q] 63 and from beyond the Jordan — Jericho, west of the Jordan — out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness with its open land, and Jahaz with its open land, [r] 64 and Kedemoth with its open land, and Mophaath with its open land; 65 and out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth-gilead with its open land and Mahanaim with its open land, 66 and Heshbon with its open land and Jazer with its open land.
