1 Chronicles 5

The Sons of Reuben

1 And the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel — he was the firstborn, but because he went up onto his father’s bed, Israel gave his blessing to his son Joseph, and Reuben was not recorded in the family line as the firstborn; 2 for Judah was mighty in strength even among his brothers, and a leader came from him; but the blessing was Joseph’s.

3 The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. 4 The sons of Joel: Shimei, and Benaiah his son. And the sons of Gog son of Shimei: 5 his son Micah, his son Recha, his son Baal, 6 his son Beerah, whom Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria carried away into exile. He was the leader of the Reubenites.

7 And his brothers by his family, in their register by their generations: the leader, Joel, and Zechariah, 8 and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel. He lived in Aroer, and as far as Nebo and Baal-meon. 9 And he lived eastward, as far as the edge of the wilderness, from the river Euphrates; for their cattle were many in the land of Gilead. 10 And in the days of Saul they made war on the foreigners living among them, and they fell into their hands — all of them living in tents, east of Gilead.

The Sons of Gad

11 The sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan, as far as Salecah: 12 Joel the firstborn, and Shapham the second, and Janai the scribe in Bashan. 13 And their brothers by their fathers’ houses: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia and Obed — seven.

14 These are the sons of Abihail son of Uri, son of Idai, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Isai, son of Juri, son of Zabucham, 15 son of Abdiel, son of Guni — leader of the house of their fathers. 16 They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and in their villages, and in all the open country of Sharon, as far as its outskirts. 17 The register of them all was made in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

War East of the Jordan, and the Exile

18 The sons of Reuben and of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, men of might — men who carried shield and sword, and drew the bow, and were trained for war — were 44,760, going out to the battle line. 19 And they made war with the Hagrites, and the Itureans, and the Naphisheans, and the Nadabeans; 20 and they prevailed over them, and the Hagrites were given into their hands, they and all their tents; because they cried out to God in the battle, and he listened to them, because they hoped in him. 21 And they carried off their household: 5,000 camels, and 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 people. 22 For many fell slain, because the war was from God. And they settled in their place until the exile.

23 And the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land from Bashan to Baal-hermon and Senir and Mount Hermon; and in Lebanon they grew many. 24 And these were the heads of their fathers’ houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Esdriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah and Jediel — men strong in power, men of renown, leaders of the houses of their fathers.

25 But they broke faith with the God of their fathers, and went whoring after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had removed from before them. 26 And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he carried Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh away into exile, and brought them to Halah and Habor and to the river Gozan, to this day.

The Sons of Levi

27 The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. 28 And the sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. 29 And the sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses and Miriam. And the sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

30 Eleazar became the father of Phinehas; Phinehas became the father of Abishua; 31 Abishua became the father of Bukki; Bukki became the father of Uzzi; 32 Uzzi became the father of Zerahiah; Zerahiah became the father of Mariel; 33 and Mariel became the father of Amariah; and Amariah became the father of Ahitub; 34 and Ahitub became the father of Zadok; and Zadok became the father of Ahimaaz; 35 and Ahimaaz became the father of Azariah; and Azariah became the father of Johanan; 36 and Johanan became the father of Azariah — he it was who served as priest in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem.

37 And Azariah became the father of Amariah; and Amariah became the father of Ahitub; 38 and Ahitub became the father of Zadok; and Zadok became the father of Shallum; 39 and Shallum became the father of Hilkiah; and Hilkiah became the father of Azariah; 40 and Azariah became the father of Seraiah; and Seraiah became the father of Jozadak. 41 And Jozadak went into the exile with Judah and Jerusalem, at the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
