2 Kings 24
Jehoiakim Rebels Against Babylon
1 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his slave for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him. 2 And the Lord sent against him the raiding bands of the Chaldeans, and the raiding bands of Aram, and the raiding bands of Moab, and the raiding bands of the children of Ammon. He sent them into the land of Judah to overpower it, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by the hand of his slaves the prophets.
3 Surely it was by the anger of the Lord that this came on Judah, to remove him from his presence, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did. 4 And he had poured out innocent blood as well, and had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; and the Lord was not willing to be moved to mercy.
5 And the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and everything he did — see, are they not written in the book of the daily record of the kings of Judah? 6 And Jehoiakim rested with his fathers, and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place. 7 And the king of Egypt did not come out of his own land again, for the king of Babylon had taken everything that belonged to the king of Egypt, from the ravine of Egypt as far as the river Euphrates.
Jehoiachin Reigns Three Months
8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan, of Jerusalem. 9 And he did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that his father did.
Jerusalem Is Taken and Emptied
10 At that time Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up to Jerusalem, and the city came under siege. 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to the city while his servants were laying siege to it. 12 And Jehoiachin king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon — he and his servants and his mother and his rulers and his eunuchs — and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign.
13 And he brought out from there all the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s house, and he cut up all the gold vessels that Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord, according to the word of the Lord. 14 And he carried Jerusalem away into exile — all the rulers, and the men of strength, ten thousand of them taken captive, and every craftsman and every smith. No one was left but the poor of the land.
15 And he carried Jehoiachin away into exile to Babylon, and the king’s mother, and the king’s wives, and his eunuchs; and the strong men of the land he led away into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, 16 and all the men of the army, seven thousand of them, and the craftsmen and the smiths, a thousand — all of them strong men making war. And the king of Babylon brought them away into exile to Babylon.
Zedekiah Is Given the Throne
17 And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his son king in his place, and he gave him the name Zedekiah. 18 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah.
19 And he did what was evil before the Lord, according to all that Jehoiachin did. 20 For it was by the anger of the Lord that this came on Jerusalem and on Judah, until he threw them out from his presence. And Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
