1 Kings 17

No Rain Except by My Word

1 And Elijah the prophet, the Tishbite from Tishbe of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord lives, the God of armies, the God of Israel, before whom I stand — there will be no dew or rain in these years except by the word of my mouth.” 2 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 3 “Go from here toward the east, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, facing the Jordan. 4 And you will drink water from the brook, and I will command the ravens to provide for you there.”

The Ravens at the Brook

5 And Elijah did according to the word of the Lord, and he settled by the brook Cherith, facing the Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him loaves in the morning and meat in the evening, and he drank water from the brook. 7 And after some days the brook dried up, because there had been no rain on the land.

The Widow of Zarephath

8 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 9 “Get up and go to Zarephath of Sidon. Look — I have commanded a widow woman there to provide for you.”

10 And he got up and went to Zarephath, to the gateway of the city. And there was a widow woman there, gathering sticks. And Elijah called after her and said to her, “Get me a little water in a vessel, please, and I will drink.” 11 And she went to get it. And Elijah called after her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand, please.” 12 And the woman said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have no baked cake — only a handful of flour in the jar and a little oil in the jug. And here I am, gathering two sticks, and I will go in and make it for myself and my children, and we will eat it and die.”

13 And Elijah said to her, “Take courage. Go in and do as you have said. But make me a little cake from it first and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for yourself and your children. 14 For this is what the Lord says: The jar of flour will not give out and the jug of oil will not run low, until the day the Lord gives rain on the land.”

15 And the woman went and did so. And she ate — she and he and her children. 16 And the jar of flour did not give out and the jug of oil did not run low, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by the hand of Elijah.

Her Son Dies, and Lives

17 And after this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell ill, and his illness was very severe, until no breath was left in him. 18 And she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, man of God? Have you come to me to bring my wrongdoing to mind, and to put my son to death?”

19 And Elijah said to the woman, “Give me your son.” And he took him from her lap and carried him up to the upper room where he himself was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 And Elijah cried out and said, “Alas, Lord — witness of the widow I am living with! You have brought harm on her, in putting her son to death.”

21 And he breathed on the boy three times, and called on the Lord and said, “Lord my God, let the soul of this boy come back into him.” 22 And it was so, and the boy cried out.

23 And he brought him down from the upper room into the house and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “Look — your son is alive.” 24 And the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and the word of the Lord in your mouth is true.”
