1 Kings

1 Kings 9

The Lord Appears to Solomon a Second Time

1 And when Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord, and the king’s house, and all the work of Solomon, everything he wanted to do, 2 the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared at Gibeon. 3 And the Lord said to him, “I have heard the voice of your prayer and your plea, which you made before me. I have done for you according to all your prayer. I have made this house holy, which you built, to put my name there forever, and my eyes and my heart will be there all the days.

4 “And as for you — if you walk before me as David your father walked, in holiness of heart and in uprightness, doing everything I commanded him, and if you keep my decrees and my commands, 5 then I will raise up the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, as I spoke to David your father, saying, ‘A man of yours will never be taken away as leader in Israel.’

6 “But if you and your children truly turn away from me, and do not keep my commands and my decrees, which Moses set before you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, 7 then I will take Israel away from the land I gave them, and this house, which I made holy to my name, I will throw away from before me; and Israel will be a waste, and a byword among all the peoples.

8 “And this house, which is high — everyone who passes by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land and to this house?’ 9 And they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and they took hold of foreign gods and bowed down to them and served them — that is why the Lord has brought this evil on them.’”

Then Solomon brought Pharaoh’s daughter up out of the city of David into his own house, which he built for himself in those days.

Twenty Cities for Hiram

10 During the twenty years in which Solomon was building the two houses, the house of the Lord and the house of the king, 11 Hiram king of Tyre had helped Solomon with cedar timber and pine timber, and with gold, and with everything he wanted. Then the king gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

12 And Hiram came out from Tyre and went to Galilee to see the cities Solomon had given him, and they did not please him. 13 And he said, “What are these cities you have given me, brother?” And he called them Boundary, to this day. 14 And Hiram brought Solomon four and a half tons of gold.

The Ship at Ezion-geber

26 And it was for this that King Solomon built a ship at Ezion-geber, which is near Elath on the shore of the farthest sea, in the land of Edom. 27 And Hiram sent servants of his own in the ship, seamen who knew how to row and knew the sea, along with Solomon’s servants. 28 And they came to Ophir and took four and a half tons of gold from there and brought it to King Solomon.
