Genesis 40
Two Dreams in the Prison
1 After these things, the chief cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the chief baker sinned against their lord, the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two eunuchs — the chief cupbearer and the chief baker — 3 and he put them under guard with the keeper of the prison, in the place where Joseph had been taken. 4 The chief keeper of the prison assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them. And they were in the prison for some days. 5 And one night the two of them both dreamed — the chief cupbearer and the chief baker of the king of Egypt, who were held in the prison — each his own dream. 6 When Joseph came in to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled. 7 And he asked Pharaoh’s eunuchs, who were with him in his master’s prison, “Why are your faces sad today?” 8 And they said to him, “We have seen a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” And Joseph said to them, “Does not the interpretation of dreams come through God? Tell them to me.”
9 So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said, “In my dream, a vine stood before me, 10 and on the vine were three stems. It budded, and blossoms shot up, and the clusters of grapes ripened. 11 And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand. I took the grapes and squeezed them into the cup, and set the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.” 12 And Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three stems are three days. 13 In three more days Pharaoh will remember your office, and restore you to your place as chief cupbearer, and you will set Pharaoh’s cup in his hand as before, in your old standing, when you were his cupbearer. 14 Only remember me, of your own accord, when it goes well with you. Show me mercy: mention me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this dungeon. 15 For I was truly stolen away from the land of the Hebrews — and here too I have done nothing, yet they have thrown me into this pit.” 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also saw a dream. I thought I was carrying three baskets of coarse bread on my head, 17 and in the top basket was every kind of baker’s work that Pharaoh eats — and the birds of the sky were eating them out of the basket on my head.” 18 And Joseph answered him, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days. 19 In three more days Pharaoh will take your head from you, and hang you on a tree, and the birds of the sky will eat your flesh from off you.”
20 And on the third day it was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he made a feast for all his servants. And in the midst of his servants he remembered the office of the cupbearer and the office of the baker: 21 he restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and he set the cup in Pharaoh’s hand — 22 and the chief baker he hanged, just as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph. He forgot him.
