Genesis
Genesis 4
Cain and Abel
1 Adam knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have gained a man through God.” 2 Then she bore his brother Abel. Abel became a keeper of sheep, and Cain worked the ground.
3 After some time, Cain brought the Lord a sacrifice from the fruits of the earth, 4 and Abel brought one too, from the firstborn of his sheep and from their fat portions. God looked upon Abel and his gifts, 5 but to Cain and his sacrifices he paid no regard. Cain was overcome with sorrow, and his face fell. 6 The Lord God said to Cain, “Why have you become so sorrowful? Why has your face fallen? 7 If you brought it rightly, but did not divide it rightly, have you not sinned? Be still — he will turn to you, and you will rule over him.”
8 Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out into the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9 God said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 God said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the earth, it will no longer give you its strength. You will live groaning and trembling on the earth.”
13 Cain said to the Lord, “My guilt is too great for me to be forgiven. 14 If today you drive me from the face of the earth, and I am hidden from your presence, groaning and trembling on the earth — then anyone who finds me will kill me.” 15 The Lord God said to him, “Not so. Anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” And the Lord God put a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the presence of God and lived in the land of Nod, opposite Eden.
The Line of Cain
17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. Cain was building a city, and he named the city after his son Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Gaidad; Gaidad fathered Maiel; Maiel fathered Methuselah; and Methuselah fathered Lamech. 19 Lamech took two wives for himself: the name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise cattle. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the one who invented the lyre and the harp. 22 Zillah also gave birth — to Tubal, who was a smith, a forger of both bronze and iron. And Tubal’s sister was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives:
25 Adam knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore a son and named him Seth. She said, “God has raised up another child for me in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 Seth too had a son, and he named him Enosh. He hoped to call on the name of the Lord God.
