Genesis 39

Joseph in Potiphar’s House

1 So Joseph was brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, the eunuch of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hands of the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. 2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a man who prospered. And he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 His master saw that the Lord was with him, and that whatever he set his hand to, the Lord prospered in his hands. 4 And Joseph found favor in the sight of his master and was well-pleasing to him. And he set him over his house, and everything he had he put into Joseph’s hands. 5 And from the time he set him over his house and over everything he had, the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph’s sake — the blessing of the Lord was on all his possessions, in the house and in the field. 6 So he left everything he had in Joseph’s hands, and with him there he gave no thought to anything except the bread he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and very beautiful in face.

The Lie of Potiphar’s Wife

7 After these things, his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Because of me, my master pays no mind to anything in his house — he has put everything he owns into my hands. 9 Nothing in this house stands above me, and nothing has been withheld from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this wicked thing — and sin against God?” 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her — to lie with her, or to be with her. 11 But one day Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the household was inside. 12 And she caught him by his clothes and said, “Lie with me.” And leaving his clothes in her hands, he fled and got out. 13 When she saw that he had left his clothes in her hands and fled outside, 14 she called the people of the house and said to them, “Look — he has brought us a Hebrew servant to make sport of us! He came in to me saying, ‘Lie with me,’ and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 And when he heard me lift up my voice and cry out, he left his clothes with me and fled, and got away outside.” 16 And she kept the clothes beside her until the master came home. 17 Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew servant you brought us came in to me to make sport of me. He said to me, ‘I will lie with you.’ 18 And when he heard me lift up my voice and cry out, he left his clothes with me and fled outside.” 19 And when his master heard all the words his wife spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” he burned with anger. 20 And his master took Joseph and threw him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were kept — there, in the prison.

21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and poured mercy down on him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison. 22 And the chief keeper of the prison put the prison into Joseph’s hands, and all the prisoners in it, and everything that was done there. 23 The chief keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything under him, for everything was in Joseph’s hands, because the Lord was with him — and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper in his hands.
