2 Samuel
2 Samuel 9
David Looks for Anyone Left of Saul’s House
1 And David said, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul, that I may show mercy to him for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 There was a servant of Saul’s household whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your slave.”
3 And the king said, “Is there still a man left of the house of Saul, that I may show him the mercy of God?” And Ziba said to the king, “Jonathan still has a son, whose feet have been injured.” 4 And the king said, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.” 5 And king David sent and took him from the house of Machir son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.
Memphibosthe Comes to the King
6 And Memphibosthe son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to king David and fell on his face and bowed down to him. And David said to him, “Memphibosthe.” And he said, “Here is your slave.” 7 And David said to him, “Do not be afraid, for I will surely show you mercy for the sake of Jonathan your father, and I will give back to you all the land of Saul your father’s father; and you will eat bread at my table always.” 8 And Memphibosthe bowed down and said, “Who am I, your slave, that you have looked on a dead dog like me?”
A Place at the King’s Table
9 And the king called Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “Everything that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s son. 10 And you will work the land for him — you and your sons and your slaves — and you will bring in loaves for your master’s son, and he will eat them. And Memphibosthe your master’s son will eat bread at my table always.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty slaves. 11 And Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king has commanded his slave, so your slave will do.” And Memphibosthe ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.
12 And Memphibosthe had a young son whose name was Mica. And all who lived in the house of Ziba were slaves to Memphibosthe. 13 And Memphibosthe lived in Jerusalem, because he ate at the king’s table always; and he was lame in both his feet.
