2 Samuel
2 Samuel 8
David Subdues the Nations Around Him
1 After this, David struck the Philistines and routed them, and David took out of the hand of the Philistines what had been set apart. 2 And David struck Moab. He measured them out with cords, making them lie down on the ground: two lengths of the cord were told off to be put to death, and two lengths he kept alive. And Moab became slaves to David, bringing gifts.
3 And David struck Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he was going to set his hand on the river Euphrates. 4 David seized from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand men on foot. And David disabled all the chariots, and kept back a hundred chariots of them. 5 And Aram of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, and David struck down twenty-two thousand men of the Arameans. 6 And David set a garrison in Aram, in the part by Damascus, and the Arameans became slaves to David, bringing gifts. And the Lord saved David wherever he went.
7 And David took the gold armlets that were on the servants of Hadadezer king of Zobah, and brought them to Jerusalem. And Shishak king of Egypt took them, when he came up to Jerusalem in the days of Rehoboam son of Solomon. 8 And out of Masbak, out of the choice cities of Hadadezer, King David took a very great weight of bronze. With it Solomon made the bronze sea, and the pillars, and the basins, and all the vessels.
Toi of Hamath Sends His Son
9 And Toi king of Hamath heard that David had struck down the whole army of Hadadezer, 10 and Toi sent Jedduran his son to King David, to ask him how he fared and to bless him for making war on Hadadezer and striking him down — for Toi stood against Hadadezer. And in his hands were vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of bronze.
11 These too King David made holy to the Lord, along with the silver and the gold that he made holy out of all the cities he had brought under his power — 12 out of Edom, and out of the land of Moab, and from the sons of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek, and from the spoils of Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
13 And David made a name for himself. And on his way back he struck Edom in Gaimele — eighteen thousand of them. 14 And he set a garrison in Edom, in all Edom, and all the Edomites became slaves to the king. And the Lord saved David wherever he went.
The Men Who Served David
15 And David reigned over Israel, and David did judgment and righteousness for all his people. 16 And Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahijah was keeper of the records; 17 and Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests, and Asa was the scribe; 18 and Benaiah son of Jehoiada was counselor, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chiefs of the court.
