Genesis 33

The Brothers Meet

1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked — and there was Esau his brother coming, and four hundred men with him. And Jacob divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two servant girls. 2 He put the two servant girls and their children first, and Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 But he himself went on ahead of them, and bowed to the ground seven times as he drew near his brother. 4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and fell on his neck — and they both wept. 5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and the children, and said, “What are these to you?” And he said, “The children with whom God has shown mercy to your servant.” 6 Then the servant girls came near with their children, and bowed low. 7 And Leah came near with her children, and they bowed low. And after them Rachel and Joseph came near, and bowed low. 8 And he said, “What are all these companies of yours that I have met?” And he said, “So that your servant might find favor in your sight, my lord.” 9 And Esau said, “I have much, my brother. Keep what is yours.” 10 And Jacob said, “If I have found favor in your sight, receive the gifts from my hands. For this is why I have seen your face — as one might see the face of God — and you will receive me kindly. 11 Receive my blessings, which I have brought you, because God has shown me mercy, and I have everything.” And he pressed him, and he took them.

12 And he said, “Let us set out and travel straight on.” 13 And he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are very tender, and the flocks and herds with me are bearing young. If I drive them hard even one day, all the animals will die. 14 Let my lord go on ahead of his servant, and I will gain strength on the road, at the pace of the journey before me and the pace of the children, until I reach my lord in Seir.” 15 And Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my people with you.” And he said, “Why should you? It is enough that I have found favor in your sight, my lord.” 16 So Esau turned back that day on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob set out for Booths. There he built himself houses, and made booths for his cattle — that is why he called the name of that place Booths. 18 And Jacob came to Salem, a city of Shechem, in the land of Canaan, when he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and took a position facing the city. 19 And he bought the piece of the field where he pitched his tent from Hamor, the father of Shechem, for a hundred lambs. 20 And he set up an altar there, and called on the God of Israel.
