Joshua 14

The Land Divided by Lot

1 And these are the ones of the children of Israel who received their inheritance in the land of Canaan, to whom Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Israel gave it. 2 They received their inheritance by lot, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Joshua, for the nine tribes and the half tribe, 3 from beyond the Jordan. And to the Levites he gave no portion among them, 4 because the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; and no share in the land was given to the Levites, but only towns to live in, and the land set apart for their cattle, and their cattle. 5 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided up the land.

I Ask You for This Mountain

6 And the children of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the word that the Lord spoke to Moses the man of God about me and about you at Kadesh-barnea. 7 For I was forty years old when Moses the servant of God sent me out from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him back word according to his mind. 8 My brothers who went up with me turned the heart of the people away, but I gave myself to following the Lord my God. 9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘The land you set foot on will be your portion, and your children's forever, because you gave yourself to following after the Lord our God.’

10 And now the Lord has kept me alive, just as he said. This is the forty-fifth year since the Lord spoke this word to Moses; and Israel journeyed in the wilderness. And now, look, I am eighty-five years old today. 11 I am still strong today, as I was when Moses sent me out; I am just as strong now to go out and to come in for war. 12 And now I ask you for this mountain, as the Lord said on that day — for you yourself heard this word on that day. The Anakim are there now, with cities fortified and great. If then the Lord is with me, I will destroy them, as the Lord said to me.”

Hebron Becomes Caleb's Portion

13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh son of Kenaz as his portion. 14 That is why Hebron became the portion of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and is so to this day: because he followed the decree of the Lord God of Israel. 15 And the name of Hebron before this was the city of Arbok; this was the mother-city of the Anakim. And the land rested from war.
