Joshua 11

The Kings of the North Gather

1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, he sent word to Jobab king of Merom, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings over toward great Sidon, into the hill country, and into the Arabah opposite Chinnereth, and into the plain, and into Naphath-dor, 3 and to the Canaanites along the coast on the east, and to the Amorites along the coast, and to the Hivites and the Jebusites and the Perizzites who were in the hill country, and to the Hittites who were under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

4 And they came out, they and their kings with them, as many as the sand of the sea, with horses and a great many chariots. 5 All these kings came together and arrived at the same place, and they camped at the water of Merom to make war on Israel.

6 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this hour I am handing them over, routed, before Israel. You are to cut the sinews of their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”

7 And Joshua and all the fighting men came on them at the water of Merom suddenly, and they fell on them in the hill country. 8 And the Lord handed them over into Israel's power; they cut them down and chased them as far as great Sidon, and as far as Maseron, and as far as the plains of Massoch on the east; and they cut them down until not one of them was left alive. 9 And Joshua did to them as the Lord commanded him: he cut the sinews of their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

Hazor Burned

10 And Joshua turned back at that time and took Hazor and its king; now Hazor in earlier days was the ruler of all these kingdoms. 11 And they killed with the sword everything in it that breathed, and destroyed them all, and not a breathing thing was left in it; and they burned Hazor with fire. 12 And Joshua took all the cities of those kings, and their kings, and struck them down with the edge of the sword, and they destroyed them, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had ordered.

13 But Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds — Hazor alone Joshua burned. 14 And the children of Israel took all its spoils as plunder for themselves; but all of them they destroyed with the edge of the sword, until he had done away with them; they left not one breathing thing of them. 15 As the Lord ordered Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he passed over nothing of all that Moses ordered him.

The Whole Land Taken

16 And Joshua took the whole land: the hill country, and all the Nageb, and all the land of Goshen, and the plain country, and the country toward the west, and the mountain of Israel, and the low ground, 17 the parts along the mountain from Mount Halak, and the rise that goes up toward Seir, and as far as Baal-gad and the plains of Lebanon under Mount Hermon. And he took all their kings and struck them down and put them to death.

18 For many days Joshua made war on these kings. 19 And there was no city Israel did not take; they took them all in war. 20 For it was from the Lord that their heart was made to stand firm, to go and meet Israel in war, so that they would be destroyed, so that no mercy would be shown them, but that they would be destroyed, just as the Lord had said to Moses.

21 And Joshua came at that time and destroyed the Anakim out of the hill country — out of Hebron and out of Debir and out of Anaboth, and out of every family of Israel, and out of all the mountain of Judah, with their cities; and Joshua destroyed them. 22 Not one of the Anakim was left among the children of Israel; only in Gaza and in Gath and in Ashdod were any left. 23 And Joshua took the whole land, just as the Lord commanded Moses; and Joshua gave it to Israel as an inheritance, divided out among them by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
