Deuteronomy 30

When You Come Back

1 “And when all these things have come on you, the blessing and the curse that I have set in front of you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord has scattered you, 2 and you turn back to the Lord your God and listen to his voice, according to everything I am charging you with today, with your whole heart and with your whole soul — 3 then the Lord will heal your sins and pity you, and gather you again out of all the nations the Lord scattered you among. 4 If you are scattered from one end of heaven to the other, the Lord your God will gather you from there, and from there the Lord your God will take you. 5 And the Lord your God will bring you in from there into the land your fathers held, and you will hold it; and he will do you good and make you more numerous than your fathers. 6 And the Lord will cleanse your heart, and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul, so that you may live. 7 And the Lord your God will put these curses on your enemies, and on those who hate you, who have hunted you down. 8 And you will turn back and listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and keep his commands, all that I am charging you with today. 9 And the Lord your God will bless you in every work of your hands, in the children of your body and in the young of your cattle and in the fruits of your land — because the Lord your God will be glad over you again, for good, as he was glad over your fathers — 10 if you will listen to the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commands and his rules and his judgments written in the book of this law, and if you turn back to the Lord your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul.

The Word Is Very Near You

11 For this command I am giving you today is not too heavy for you, and it is not far away from you. 12 It is not up in heaven, that someone should say, ‘Who will go up to heaven for us and fetch it for us, so that we can hear it and do it?’ 13 And it is not across the sea, that someone should say, ‘Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us and fetch it and make us hear it, so that we can do it?’ 14 The word is very near you — in your mouth, and in your heart, and in your hands, to do it.

Choose Life

15 See — I have set in front of you today life and death, good and evil. 16 If you listen to the commands of the Lord your God, which I command you today, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways and to keep his rules and his judgments — then you will live and become many, and the Lord your God will bless you in all the land you are going into to take. 17 But if your heart turns and you will not listen, and you go astray and bow down to other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that you will certainly be destroyed, and you will not live long at all on the land the Lord your God is giving you, which you are crossing the Jordan to take. 19 I call both heaven and earth to witness against you today: I have set in front of you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, so that you and your descendants may live — 20 to love the Lord your God, to listen to his voice, and to hold fast to him; for this is your life and the length of your days, so that you may live on the land the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham and to Isaac and to Jacob, to give them.”
