Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 27
Write It on the Stones
1 And Moses and the elders of Israel gave orders. They said, 1 “Keep all these commands, all that I command you today. 2 And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land the Lord your God is giving you, you are to set up great stones for yourself and coat them with plaster. 3 And you are to write on these stones all the words of this law, as soon as you have crossed the Jordan, when you have come into the land the Lord God of your fathers is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord God of your fathers told you. 4 And as soon as you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones I am commanding you about today, on Mount Ebal, and coat them with plaster. 5 And you are to build an altar there to the Lord your God, an altar of stones; you are not to lift an iron tool onto it. 6 You are to build the altar of the Lord your God out of whole stones, and offer whole burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God. 7 And you are to offer a sacrifice of well-being there, and eat and be full, and be glad before the Lord your God. 8 And you are to write all this law on the stones, very plainly.”
9 And Moses and the priests the Levites spoke to all Israel. They said, 9 “Be silent and listen, Israel. Today you have become a people to the Lord your God. 10 And you are to listen to the voice of the Lord your God and do all his commands and his rules, all that I command you today.”
Six Tribes on Each Mountain
11 And Moses charged the people that day. He said, 12 “These are to stand to bless the people on Mount Gerizim when you have crossed the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. 13 And these are to stand for the cursing on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad and Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali. 14 And the Levites are to speak up and say to all Israel with a loud voice:”
15 Cursed is the man who makes a carved or cast image, a detestable thing to the Lord, the work of a craftsman's hands, and sets it up in a hidden place. 15 And all the people are to say: Let it be so.
16 Cursed is the man who dishonors his father or his mother. 16 And all the people are to say: Let it be so.
