Deuteronomy 25

Forty Blows and No More

1 “And if there is a dispute between men and they come forward for judgment, and the judges judge, and vindicate the righteous one and condemn the ungodly one — 2 then if the guilty man deserves a beating, you are to have him lie down in front of the judges, and they are to beat him in their presence according to his wrongdoing. 3 They are to beat him with forty blows counted out; they are not to give more. For if you beat him with more blows than these, your brother will be disgraced in front of you. 4 You are not to muzzle the ox while it treads out the grain.

The Brother Who Will Not Build

5 And if brothers live together and one of them dies and has no child, the wife of the dead man is not to marry outside the family, to an unrelated man. Her husband's brother is to go in to her and take her as his wife and live with her. 6 And the child she bears is to carry the name of the dead man, so that his name is not wiped out of Israel. 7 And if the man is not willing to take his brother's wife, then the woman is to go up to the gate, to the elders, and say: My husband's brother refuses to raise up his brother's name in Israel; my husband's brother has refused. 8 And the elders of his city are to call him and speak to him. And if he stands there and says, ‘I will not take her’ — 9 then his brother's wife is to come forward in front of the elders and pull one sandal off his foot and spit in his face; and she is to speak up and say: This is what is done to the man who will not build his brother's house in Israel. 10 And his name is to be called in Israel: The house of the man who had his sandal pulled off.

11 And if men are fighting, a man with his brother, and the wife of one of them comes forward to rescue her husband out of the hand of the man striking him, and she puts out her hand and takes hold of his private parts, 12 you are to cut off her hand; your eye is not to spare her.

Honest Weights

13 You are not to have two kinds of weight in your bag, a heavy one and a light one. 14 You are not to have two kinds of measure in your house, a large one and a small one. 15 You are to have a true and honest weight, and a true and honest measure — so that you may live long on the land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. 16 For everyone who does this is a detestable thing to the Lord your God — everyone who does injustice.

Remember Amalek

17 Remember what Amalek did to you on the road when you were coming out of the land of Egypt — 18 how he stood against you on the road and cut down your rear, the ones who were worn out behind you, when you were hungry and exhausted; and he did not fear God. 19 And when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land the Lord your God is giving you to hold, you are to wipe out the name of Amalek from under heaven, and you are not to forget to do it.”
