Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 23
Who May Come Into the Assembly
1 “A man crushed or cut in his private parts is not to come into the assembly of the Lord. 2 One born of a prostitute is not to come into the assembly of the Lord. 3 The Ammonite and the Moabite are not to come into the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation he is not to come into the assembly of the Lord — not ever — 4 because they did not meet you with bread and water on the road when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired Balaam son of Beor from Mesopotamia against you, to curse you. 5 But the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam, and the Lord your God turned the curses into blessings, because the Lord your God loved you. 6 You are not to seek peace with them or their good, all your days, ever. 7 You are not to detest an Edomite, because he is your brother. You are not to detest an Egyptian, because you were a newcomer in his land. 8 If sons are born to them, in the third generation they may come into the assembly of the Lord.
The Camp Is to Be Clean
9 And when you go out to fight your enemies, you are to keep yourself from every wicked thing. 10 If there is a man among you who is not clean because of something that happened to him in the night, then he is to go outside the camp; he is not to come into the camp. 11 And toward evening he is to wash his body with water, and when the sun has gone down he may come into the camp. 12 And you are to have a place outside the camp, and you are to go out there. 13 And you are to have a trowel on your belt; and when you squat down outside, you are to dig with it and then turn the earth back and cover what came out of you. 14 Because the Lord your God walks about in your camp to rescue you and to hand your enemy over to you; so your camp is to be holy, and nothing shameful is to be seen in you, or he will turn away from you.
A Runaway Servant
15 You are not to hand a servant back to his master when he comes to you from his master and attaches himself to you. 16 He is to live with you; he is to live among you wherever he likes; you are not to mistreat him.
17 There is not to be a prostitute among the daughters of Israel, and there is not to be a man who prostitutes himself among the sons of Israel; there is not to be a woman initiated into the rites among the daughters of Israel, and there is not to be a man initiated among the sons of Israel. 18 You are not to bring the pay of a prostitute, or the price of a dog, into the house of the Lord your God for any vow; because both of them are a detestable thing to the Lord your God.
Lending, Vows and a Neighbor's Field
19 You are not to lend to your brother at interest — interest on silver, or interest on food, or interest on anything you may lend out. 20 You may lend at interest to a foreigner, but to your brother you are not to lend at interest — so that the Lord your God may bless you in all your works on the land you are going into to take. 21 And if you make a vow to the Lord your God, you are not to be slow to pay it; for the Lord your God will certainly require it of you, and otherwise it will be sin in you. 22 But if you would rather not vow, it is not sin in you. 23 You are to keep the words that come out from between your lips; and as you have vowed a gift to the Lord your God, so you are to do what you have spoken with your mouth. 24 And if you go into your neighbor's grain field, you may gather the ears with your hands; but you are not to put a sickle to your neighbor's grain. 25 And if you go into your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat as many grapes as you want to fill yourself; but you are not to put any into a container.”
