Deuteronomy 22

What You Find Belonging to Your Brother

1 “When you see your brother's calf or his sheep straying on the road, you are not to look the other way; you are certainly to bring them back to your brother and give them to him. 2 And if your brother does not live near you, and you do not know who he is, then you are to bring it into your house, inside, and it is to stay with you until your brother comes looking for it, and then you are to give it back to him. 3 You are to do the same with his donkey, and the same with his coat, and the same with anything your brother has lost — whatever he has lost and you have found, you are not permitted to look the other way. 4 You are not to see your brother's donkey or his calf fallen on the road and look the other way; you are certainly to help him get them up.

5 A man's clothing is not to be on a woman, and a man is not to put on a woman's dress; for everyone who does these things is a detestable thing to the Lord your God. 6 And if you come across a bird's nest in front of you on the road, or in any tree, or on the ground, with chicks or eggs in it, and the mother sitting on the chicks or on the eggs, you are not to take the mother along with the young. 7 You are certainly to let the mother go, and take the young for yourself — so that it may go well with you, and you may live long. 8 If you build a new house, you are to make a low wall around the roof, so that you do not bring blood-guilt on your house if anyone falls off it. 9 You are not to sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, or the whole crop becomes holy — the seed you sow along with the fruit of the vineyard. 10 You are not to plow with an ox and a donkey together. 11 You are not to wear a mixed cloth, wool and linen together. 12 You are to make tassels on the four corners of the clothes you wear.

A Charge Against a Bride

13 And if a man takes a wife and lives with her and then hates her, 14 and pins shameful words on her and gives her a bad name and says, ‘I took this woman, and when I came to her I did not find the signs of her virginity’ — 15 then the father and mother of the young woman are to take the signs of her virginity and bring them out to the elders of the city at the gate. 16 And the father of the young woman is to say to the elders: I gave this daughter of mine to this man as a wife, and he has come to hate her, 17 and now he pins shameful words on her, saying, ‘I did not find the signs of virginity in your daughter’ — and here are the signs of my daughter's virginity. And they are to spread out the cloth in front of the elders of the city. 18 And the elders of that city are to take that man and punish him, 19 and fine him a hundred pieces of silver, and give them to the father of the young woman, because he brought out a bad name against a virgin of Israel. And she is to be his wife; he is never permitted to send her away. 20 But if this report is true and the signs of virginity are not found for the young woman, 21 then they are to bring the young woman out to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city are to stone her with stones and she is to die, because she has done a disgraceful thing among the children of Israel, making her father's house unclean by whoring. So you are to burn the evil out from among you.

22 And if a man is found lying with a woman who is married to a man, you are to kill both of them — the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you are to burn the wicked one out of Israel. 23 And if there is a young woman engaged to a man, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, 24 you are to bring them both out to the gate of their city and they are to be stoned with stones and die — the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor's promised wife. So you are to burn the evil out from among you. 25 But if a man finds an engaged young woman out in the open country, and he forces her and lies with her, you are to put to death only the man who lay with her. 26 And you are to do nothing to the young woman; there is no sin worth dying for in the young woman. This case is like a man rising up against his neighbor and killing him — 27 because he found her out in the open country; the engaged young woman cried out, and there was nobody to help her. 28 And if a man finds a young virgin who is not engaged, and forces her and lies with her, and they are found out, 29 the man who lay with her is to give the father of the young woman fifty pieces of silver, and she is to be his wife, because he has humbled her; he is never permitted to send her away. 30 A man is not to take his father's wife, and he is not to uncover what belongs to his father.”
