Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 14
You Are the Children of the Lord
1 “You are the children of the Lord your God. You are not to cut yourselves or shave the front of your head for the dead. 2 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people of his own out of all the nations on the face of the earth. 3 You are not to eat any detestable thing.
What You May Eat
4 These are the animals you may eat: the calf from the herd, and the lamb from the sheep, and the kid from the goats, 5 the deer, and the gazelle, and the wild ox, and the ibex, and the white-rumped antelope, and the oryx, and the giraffe. 6 Every animal that has a split hoof, divided in two claws, and that chews the cud — those you may eat. 7 And these you are not to eat, out of those that chew the cud and out of those with split hoofs and divided claws: the camel, and the hare, and the rock badger — because they chew the cud but do not have a split hoof. They are unclean to you. 8 And the pig, because it has a split hoof and makes claws of the hoof, but it does not chew the cud. It is unclean to you. You are not to eat their meat, and you are not to touch their dead bodies.
9 And these you may eat of all that are in the water: everything with fins and scales you may eat. 10 And anything without fins and scales you are not to eat; they are unclean to you.
11 Every clean bird you may eat. 12 And these of them you are not to eat: the eagle, and the griffon vulture, and the sea eagle, 13 and the vulture, and the kite and its kind, 14 and every raven and its kind, 15 and the ostrich, and the owl, and the gull, 16 and the heron, and the swan, and the ibis, 17 and the cormorant, and the hawk and its kind, and the hoopoe, and the night raven, 18 and the pelican, and the plover and its kind, and the swamphen, and the bat. 19 All the winged things that crawl are unclean to you; you are not to eat them. 20 Every clean bird you may eat. 21 You are not to eat anything that dies of itself. Give it to the newcomer in your towns and he may eat it, or sell it to a foreigner — because you are a holy people to the Lord your God. You are not to boil a lamb in its mother's milk.
A Tenth, Year by Year
22 You are to set aside a tenth of all the produce of your seed, the fruit of your field, year by year. 23 And you are to eat it before the Lord your God in the place the Lord your God chooses to have his name called there. You are to bring the tenth of your grain and of your wine and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock — so that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always. 24 And if the journey is too far for you and you cannot carry them, because the place the Lord your God chooses to have his name called there is far from you — because the Lord your God will bless you — 25 then you are to sell them for money, and take the money in your hands, and go to the place the Lord your God chooses. 26 And you are to give the money for whatever your soul wants — for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or you may lay it out on strong drink, or on whatever your soul wants — and you are to eat there before the Lord your God, and be glad, you and your household, 27 and the Levite who is in your towns, because he has no share or inheritance with you. 28 At the end of three years you are to bring out all the tenth of your produce for that year and store it up in your towns. 29 And the Levite is to come, because he has no part or portion with you, and the newcomer, and the fatherless, and the widow who are in your towns; and they are to eat and be full — so that the Lord your God may bless you in every work you do.”
