Deuteronomy 10

Two Tablets Again

1 “At that time the Lord said to me: Cut yourself two tablets of stone like the first ones, and come up to me on the mountain; and make yourself an ark of wood. 2 And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke; and you are to put them into the ark. 3 So I made an ark of boards of wood that does not rot, and I cut tablets of stone like the first, and I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. 4 And he wrote on the tablets, in the same writing as the first, the ten words that the Lord spoke to you on the mountain out of the middle of the fire; and the Lord gave them to me. 5 And I turned and came down from the mountain and put the tablets into the ark I had made; and there they are, as the Lord commanded me.

6 And the children of Israel set out from Beeroth of the sons of Jaakan to Moserah. Aaron died there, and he was buried there, and Eleazar his son became priest in his place. 7 From there they set out to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land where there are streams of water. 8 At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi, to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord and do the work of the service and bless in his name, to this day. 9 That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their brothers; the Lord himself is their inheritance, as he said to them. 10 And I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; and the Lord listened to me that time as well, and the Lord would not destroy you. 11 And the Lord said to me: Go, set out ahead of this people, and let them go in and take the land I swore to their fathers to give them.

What Does the Lord Ask of You?

12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you, except to fear the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul, 13 and to keep the commands of the Lord your God and his rules, everything I am charging you with today — so that it may go well with you? 14 See — the heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth and everything in it. 15 And yet the Lord set his heart on your fathers, to love them, and he chose their descendants after them — you — out of all the nations, as it is this day. 16 So circumcise the hardness of your heart, and do not stiffen your neck any more. 17 For the Lord your God, he is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great and strong and fearful God, who does not take account of who a man is and will not take a bribe; 18 who carries out judgment for the newcomer and the fatherless and the widow, and who loves the newcomer, giving him food and clothing. 19 And you are to love the newcomer, because you were newcomers in the land of Egypt. 20 You are to fear the Lord your God and serve him, and hold fast to him, and swear by his name. 21 He is your boast and he is your God, who has done among you these great and glorious things that your own eyes have seen. 22 Your fathers went down into Egypt seventy souls, and now the Lord your God has made you as many as the stars of heaven.”
