Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 8
Not by Bread Alone
1 “You are to be careful to do all the commands I am charging you with today, so that you may live and become many, and go in and take the land the Lord your God swore to give to your fathers. 2 And you are to remember the whole way the Lord your God led you in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, and to bring out what was in your heart — whether you would keep his commands or not. 3 And he humbled you and let you go hungry, and fed you with manna, which your fathers did not know, to teach you that man is not to live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God. 4 Your clothes did not wear out on you, and your feet were not worn hard — these forty years. 5 And you are to know in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you. 6 And you are to keep the commands of the Lord your God, to walk in his ways and to fear him.
A Good Land
7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good and wide land, where there are rushing streams and springs from the deep places, running out through the plains and through the hills — 8 a land of wheat and barley, where there are vines, figs, pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey; 9 a land where you will not eat your bread in poverty and will not go short of anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you will dig bronze. 10 And you will eat and be full, and you will bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.
Be Careful That You Do Not Forget
11 Watch yourself, so that you do not forget the Lord your God and stop keeping his commands and his judgments and rules, which I am commanding you today — 12 so that when you have eaten and are full, and have built fine houses and settled in them, 13 and your oxen and your sheep have grown many, and your silver and your gold have grown many, and everything you own has grown many, 14 you are not lifted up in heart and do not forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 15 who brought you through that great and terrible wilderness, where there is the biting snake and the scorpion and the drought, where there was no water; who brought you a spring of water out of the flint rock; 16 who fed you with manna in the wilderness, which your fathers did not know — to humble you and test you thoroughly, and to do you good in the end.
17 So that you do not say in your heart, ‘My own strength and the power of my hand have made me all this wealth.’ 18 But you are to remember the Lord your God, that it is he who gives you the strength to make wealth — so that he may confirm his covenant, which the Lord swore to your fathers, as he has this day. 19 And if you do forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and bow down to them, I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that you will certainly perish. 20 Like the other nations the Lord God is destroying in front of you, so you will perish, because you did not listen to the voice of the Lord your God.”
