Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 3
Og of Bashan
1 “And we turned and went up the road toward Bashan; and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all his people, to fight at Edrei. 2 And the Lord said to me: Do not be afraid of him, because I have handed him and all his people and all his land over into your hands; and you are to do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon. 3 And the Lord our God handed him over into our hands, Og king of Bashan and all his people; and we struck him down until none of his was left. 4 And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city we did not take from them — sixty cities, all the country around Argob, belonging to King Og in Bashan. 5 All of them were strong cities, with high walls and gates and bars — besides a great many towns of the Perizzites. 6 We destroyed them completely, as we had dealt with Sihon king of Heshbon; so we destroyed every city completely, and the women and the children, 7 and all the cattle; and we took the plunder of the cities for ourselves.
8 And at that time we took the land out of the hands of the two kings of the Amorites who were across the Jordan, stretching from the brook of the Arnon as far as Hermon. 9 The Phoenicians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorite has called it Senir. 10 All the cities of the tableland, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of Og's kingdom in Bashan. 11 For only Og king of Bashan was left of the Rephaim. His bed was a bed of iron — it is in the chief city of the children of Ammon — thirteen and a half feet long and six feet wide, by an ordinary man's measure.
The Land East of the River
12 And we took that land for our own at that time, from Aroer, which is on the border of the brook Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead; and I gave its cities to Reuben and to Gad. 13 And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half tribe of Manasseh — and all the country around Argob, all that Bashan; it is counted a land of Rephaim. 14 And Jair son of Manasseh took all the country around Argob as far as the borders of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them after his own name: Bashan Havvoth-jair, to this day. 15 And to Machir I gave Gilead. 16 And to Reuben and to Gad I gave the land below Gilead as far as the brook of the Arnon — the border running between the brook and as far as the Jabbok; the brook is the border of the children of Ammon. 17 And the Arabah and the Jordan are the boundary, from Chinnereth to the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, below the slopes of Pisgah, on the east.
18 And I charged you at that time. I said: The Lord your God has given you this land as your portion. Arm yourselves, every man of you who is able, and go ahead of your brothers the children of Israel. 19 Only your wives and your children and your cattle — I know you have a great deal of cattle — let them stay in the cities I have given you, 20 until the Lord your God gives your brothers rest as he has given it to you, and they too take the land the Lord our God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan; then you may go back, each man to the inheritance I have given you. 21 And I commanded Joshua at that time. I said: Your own eyes have seen everything the Lord our God did to these two kings; the Lord our God will do the same to all the kingdoms you are crossing over into. 22 Do not be afraid of them, because the Lord our God himself will fight for you.
Let That Be Enough
23 And I begged the Lord at that time. I said: 24 Lord God, you have begun to show your servant your strength and your power and your mighty hand and your uplifted arm; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do what you have done, and match your might? 25 Let me cross over and see this good land that is beyond the Jordan — this good hill country, and Lebanon. 26 And because of you the Lord took no notice of me and would not listen to me; and the Lord said to me: Let that be enough for you. Do not speak to me about this matter again. 27 Go up to the top of the cut rock and look with your eyes west and north and south and east, and see it with your eyes — for you are not going to cross this Jordan. 28 And charge Joshua, and give him strength, and put heart into him; for he is the one who will go ahead of this people, and he is the one who will give them the inheritance of all the land you have seen. 29 And we stayed in the valley near the house of Peor.
