Numbers 36

The Other Half of the Case

1 And the heads of the tribe of the sons of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, of the tribe of the sons of Joseph, came forward and spoke in front of Moses and in front of Eleazar the priest and in front of the heads of the fathers' houses of the children of Israel. 2 They said, 2 “The Lord commanded our lord to hand out the land of inheritance by lot to the children of Israel; and the Lord instructed our lord to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. 3 And they will become wives in one of the tribes of the children of Israel; so their inheritance will be taken away from the holding of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe the women marry into, and it will be taken out of the portion of our own inheritance. 4 And when the release comes for the children of Israel, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe the women marry into, and their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers' tribe.”

5 And Moses charged the children of Israel at the command of the Lord. He said, 5 “What the tribe of the sons of Joseph says is right. 6 This is the thing the Lord has laid down for the daughters of Zelophehad: let them marry whoever pleases them, only let them marry within the clan of their father's tribe. 7 So the inheritance of the children of Israel will not move about from tribe to tribe; the children of Israel are each to hold firmly to the inheritance of their father's tribe. 8 And any daughter who is heir to a holding in the tribes of the children of Israel is to marry someone from her father's tribe, so that the children of Israel may each keep the holding of his father's tribe. 9 And the inheritance will not move about from one tribe to another, but the children of Israel are each to hold firmly to his own inheritance.”

10 As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did. 11 So Tirzah and Hoglah and Milcah and Noah and Mahlah, the daughters of Zelophehad, married their cousins; 12 they married into the tribe of Manasseh of the sons of Joseph, and their inheritance stayed with the tribe of their father's family. 13 These are the commands and the rules and the judgments that the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, on the west of Moab, by the Jordan at Jericho.
