Numbers 30

A Man's Word

1 And Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to everything the Lord had commanded Moses. 2 And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the children of Israel. He said, 2 “This is the thing the Lord has commanded. 3 When a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath, or binds himself with a binding promise on his soul, he is not to break his word; everything that comes out of his mouth he is to do.

A Daughter in Her Father's House

4 And if a woman makes a vow to the Lord, or binds herself with a binding promise while she is young, in her father's house, 5 and her father hears her vows and the binding promises she has bound her soul with, and her father says nothing to her, then all her vows stand, and all the binding promises she has bound her soul with hold for her. 6 But if her father flatly overrules her on the day he hears all her vows and the binding promises she has taken on her soul, they do not stand; and the Lord will hold her clean, because her father overruled her.

A Married Woman

7 And if she is married, and her vows are on her according to what her lips said, and the binding promises she has taken on her soul, 8 and her husband hears and says nothing to her on the day he hears, then all her vows are binding, and the binding promises she has taken on her soul stand. 9 But if her husband flatly overrules her on the day he hears her, then none of her vows or the binding promises she has taken on her soul stand, because her husband has overruled her; and the Lord will hold her clean. 10 And the vow of a widow, or of a woman who has been put away, whatever she binds on her soul, stands for her.

11 And if she made her vow in her husband's house, or bound her soul with an oath, 12 and her husband heard and said nothing to her and did not overrule her, then all her vows stand, and all the binding promises she has taken on her soul stand against her. 13 But if her husband cancels the vow outright on the day he hears it, then nothing that came out of her lips — in her vows or in the binding promises taken on her soul — stands for her. Her husband has canceled them, and the Lord will hold her clean. 14 Every vow and every binding oath to deny herself, her husband may confirm for her, or her husband may cancel. 15 But if he says nothing at all to her, day after day, then he binds all her vows on her; he confirms for her the binding promises she has bound on herself, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard. 16 And if he cancels them at all after the day he heard them, then he is to carry his sin. 17 These are the rules the Lord commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter while she is young, in her father's house.”
