Numbers 26

1 And after the plague, the Lord spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest. He said, 2 “Take the total of the whole gathering of the children of Israel from twenty years old and up, by their fathers' houses — everyone in Israel who goes out to battle.” 3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho. They said, 4 “This is the counting from twenty years old and up, as the Lord commanded Moses.” 4 And the children of Israel who came out of Egypt are these.

5 Reuben was Israel's firstborn. The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, and the clan of the Hanochites; to Pallu belongs the clan of the Palluites; 6 to Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; to Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. 7 These are the clans of Reuben; and their count was 43,730. 8 And the sons of Pallu: Eliab — 9 and the sons of Eliab: Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. These are the men of standing in the gathering; these are the ones who rose up against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, in the rebellion against the Lord. 10 And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korah, when that company died, when the fire ate up the two hundred and fifty; and they became a sign. 11 But the sons of Korah did not die. [a]

12 And the sons of Simeon — the clans of the sons of Simeon: to Nemuel belongs the clan of the Nemuelites; to Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; to Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites; 13 to Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; to Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites. 14 These are the clans of Simeon by their count: 22,200.

15 And the sons of Judah: Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. 16 And these were the sons of Judah by their clans: to Shelah belongs the clan of the Shelanites; to Perez, the clan of the Perezites; to Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites. 17 And the sons of Perez: to Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; to Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites. 18 These are the clans of Judah by their count: 76,500.

19 And the sons of Issachar by their clans: to Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; to Puah, the clan of the Puahites; 20 to Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; to Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites. 21 These are the clans of Issachar by their count: 64,300.

22 The sons of Zebulun by their clans: to Sered, the clan of the Seredites; to Elon, the clan of the Elonites; to Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites. 23 These are the clans of Zebulun by their count: 60,500.

24 The sons of Gad by their clans: to Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; to Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; to Shuni, the clan of the Shunites; 25 to Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; to Eri, the clan of the Erites; 26 to Arod, the clan of the Arodites; to Areli, the clan of the Arelites. 27 These are the clans of the sons of Gad by their count: 40,500.

28 The sons of Asher by their clans: to Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; to Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; to Beriah, the clan of the Beriites. 29 To Heber, the clan of the Heberites; to Malchiel, the clan of the Malchielites. 30 And the name of Asher's daughter was Serah. 31 These are the clans of Asher by their count: 53,400.

32 The sons of Joseph by their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim. 33 The sons of Manasseh: to Machir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir became the father of Gilead; to Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites. 34 And these are the sons of Gilead: to Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; to Helek, the clan of the Helekites; 35 to Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites; to Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites; 36 to Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; and to Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites. 37 And Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters; and these were the names of Zelophehad's daughters: Mahlah, and Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. 38 These are the clans of Manasseh by their count: 52,700.

39 And these are the children of Ephraim: to Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; to Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites. 40 These are the sons of Shuthelah: to Eran, the clan of the Eranites. 41 These are the clans of Ephraim by their count: 32,500. These are the clans of the children of Joseph by their clans.

42 The sons of Benjamin by their clans: to Bela, the clan of the Belaites; to Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; to Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites; 43 to Shupham, the clan of the Shuphamites. 44 And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: to Ard, the clan of the Ardites; and to Naaman, the clan of the Naamanites. 45 These are the sons of Benjamin by their clans, by their count: 45,600.

46 And the sons of Dan by their clans: to Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites. These are the clans of Dan by their clans. 47 All the clans of Shuham by their count: 64,400.

48 The sons of Naphtali by their clans: to Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites; to Guni, the clan of the Gunites; 49 to Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites; to Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites. 50 These are the clans of Naphtali by their count: 45,400. 51 This is the count of the children of Israel: 601,730. 52 And the Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 53 “The land is to be divided among these, so that they take it for their own by the number of the names. 54 To the larger number you are to give the larger inheritance, and to the smaller number the smaller inheritance; each is to be given his inheritance according to how they were counted. 55 The land is to be divided among the names by lot; they are to take it for their own by the tribes of their fathers. [c] 56 You are to divide their inheritance by lot between the many and the few.”

57 And the sons of Levi by their clans: to Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; to Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; to Merari, the clan of the Merarites. 58 These are the clans of the sons of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Korahites, and the clan of the Mushites. And Kohath became the father of Amram. 59 And the name of his wife was Jochebed, daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram: Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister. 60 And to Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, and Eleazar and Ithamar. 61 And Nadab and Abihu died when they brought foreign fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai. 62 And by their count they were 23,000, every male from a month old and up; for they were not counted along with the children of Israel, because no portion is given them among the children of Israel. [d]

63 And this is the count of Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the children of Israel in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho. 64 And among these there was not one man who had been counted by Moses and Aaron when they counted the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said to them that they would surely die in the wilderness; and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
