Numbers 15
What Goes With Each Offering
1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: When you come into the land where you are to live, which I am giving you, 3 and you make a whole burnt offering to the Lord — a whole burnt offering or a sacrifice, to carry out a vow, or as a gift of your own choice, or at your feasts, to make a pleasing smell to the Lord, from the herd or from the flock — 4 then whoever brings his gift to the Lord is to bring with it a sacrifice of fine flour, two quarts, mixed with a quart of oil. 5 And for a drink offering you are to bring a quart of wine with the whole burnt offering or with the sacrifice. This is what you are to bring for each lamb, as a sacrifice, a pleasing smell to the Lord. 6 And for a ram, when you bring it as a whole burnt offering or as a sacrifice, you are to prepare as its sacrifice four quarts of fine flour mixed with a third of a gallon of oil; 7 and you are to bring a third of a gallon of wine as a drink offering, for a pleasing smell to the Lord. 8 And if you sacrifice a young bull from the herd as a whole burnt offering or as a sacrifice, to carry out a vow or as a sacrifice of well-being to the Lord, 9 then with the bull he is to bring a sacrifice of six quarts of fine flour mixed with half a gallon of oil, 10 and half a gallon of wine as a drink offering — a sacrifice, a pleasing smell to the Lord. 11 This is what you are to do for each bull, or each ram, or each lamb of the sheep or kid of the goats. 12 Whatever number you bring, this is what you are to do for each one, according to their number. 13 Everyone born in the country is to do this when he brings such offerings, as a pleasing smell to the Lord. 14 And if a newcomer is among you in your land, or anyone born among you through your generations, and he makes a sacrifice, a pleasing smell to the Lord — as you do, so the whole gathering is to do. 15 There is to be one law for you and for the newcomers living among you, a lasting law through your generations: as you are, so is the newcomer to be before the Lord. 16 There is to be one law and one rule for you and for the newcomer living among you.”
The First of the Dough
17 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 18 “Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: When you are going into the land I am bringing you into, 19 then when you eat the bread of the land, you are to set aside a portion set apart for the Lord. 20 As the firstfruits of your dough you are to set apart a loaf as a portion set apart; you are to set it aside the way a portion is set aside from the threshing floor. 21 You are to give the Lord a portion set apart from the firstfruits of your dough, through your generations.
When It Was Not Meant
22 And whenever you go astray and do not carry out all these commands the Lord spoke to Moses — 23 as the Lord ordered you by the hand of Moses, from the day the Lord gave the order and onward through your generations — 24 then if the wrong is done without meaning to, without the gathering knowing, the whole gathering is to bring one young bull from the herd without blemish as a whole burnt offering, a pleasing smell to the Lord, with its sacrifice and its drink offering as the rule requires, and one male goat from the goats for the sin. 25 And the priest is to make atonement for the whole gathering of the children of Israel, and the wrong will be forgiven them, because it was not meant; and they have brought their gift, an offering to the Lord, for their wrong before the Lord, for what they did without meaning to. 26 And it will be forgiven for the whole gathering of the children of Israel, and for the newcomer living among you, because it was not meant, for all the people. 27 And if one soul sins without meaning to, he is to bring one year-old female goat for the sin. 28 And the priest is to make atonement for the soul who did wrong without meaning to, who sinned without meaning to before the Lord, to make atonement for him. 29 There is to be one law for the one born among the children of Israel and for the newcomer living among them, for anyone who does wrong without meaning to.
30 But any soul, whether born in the land or a newcomer, who does anything with a proud hand — that person provokes God, and that soul will be destroyed from among his people, 31 because he has thought nothing of the word of the Lord and broken his commands. That soul will be wiped out; his sin is on him.”
The Man Gathering Sticks
32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. 33 And the ones who found him gathering sticks on the Sabbath day brought him to Moses and Aaron and to the whole gathering of the children of Israel. 34 And they put him under guard, because they had not settled what should be done with him. 35 And the Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 35 “The man is certainly to be put to death. The whole gathering is to stone him with stones.” 36 And the whole gathering brought him outside the camp, and the whole gathering stoned him with stones outside the camp, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Tassels on the Corners
37 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 38 “Speak to the children of Israel and tell them to make themselves tassels on the corners of their clothes, through their generations, and to put a blue cord on the tassel at each corner. 39 And it will be on your tassels, and you will look at them and remember all the commands of the Lord and do them; and you will not turn back after your own thoughts and after what your eyes see, the things you go whoring after — 40 so that you may remember and carry out all my commands, and be holy to your God. 41 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord your God.”
