Numbers 5

Outside the Camp

1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2 “Charge the children of Israel to send out of the camp everyone who has leprosy, and everyone who has a discharge, and everyone who is unclean through a dead person. 3 Whether male or female, send them outside the camp; they are not to defile the camps I live among.” 4 And the children of Israel did so, and sent them outside the camp. As the Lord had said to Moses, so the children of Israel did.

Paying Back What Was Taken

5 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 6 “Speak to the children of Israel: When a man or a woman commits any of the sins people commit, and that soul overlooks the command and does wrong, 7 that person is to speak out openly the sin he has committed, and make good the wrong: he is to pay back the full amount, and add a fifth more to it, and give it to the one he wronged. 8 But if the man has no near relative to make good the wrong to, then what is paid back for the wrong belongs to the Lord — it is the priest's — besides the ram of atonement, by which atonement is made for him. 9 And every firstfruits from all the holy things of the children of Israel, whatever they bring to the Lord, belongs to the priest himself. 10 And every man's holy things are his own; and whatever a man gives to the priest, that is the priest's.”

When a Husband Is Jealous

11 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 12 “Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: If any man's wife goes astray against him and slights him, 13 and someone lies with her, and it is hidden from her husband's eyes, and she keeps it hidden and is defiled, and there was no witness with her and she was not caught; 14 and a spirit of jealousy comes over him and he grows jealous of his wife, and she has been defiled — or a spirit of jealousy comes over him and he grows jealous of his wife, and she has not been defiled — 15 then the man is to bring his wife to the priest, and bring the gift for her: two quarts of barley flour. He is not to pour oil on it or put frankincense on it, because it is a sacrifice of jealousy, a sacrifice of remembrance, calling sin to mind. 16 And the priest is to bring her forward and set her before the Lord. 17 And the priest is to take clean running water in a clay pot, and take some of the dust on the floor of the tent of witness, and put it into the water. 18 And the priest is to set the woman before the Lord and uncover the woman's head, and put into her hands the sacrifice of remembrance, the sacrifice of jealousy; and in the priest's own hand is to be the water of testing that brings the curse.

19 And the priest is to put her under oath and say to the woman: If no one has lain with you, and you have not gone astray and been defiled while under your husband, be free from this water of testing that brings the curse. 20 But if, being a married woman, you have gone astray and been defiled, and someone other than your husband has lain with you — 21 then the priest is to put the woman under oath with the oaths of this curse, and the priest is to say to the woman: May the Lord make you a curse and an oath among your people, in that the Lord makes your thigh waste away and your belly swell; 22 and may this water that brings the curse go into your body, to make your belly swell and your thigh waste away. And the woman is to say, Let it be so; let it be so. 23 And the priest is to write these curses on a scroll, and wash them off into the water of testing that brings the curse, 24 and he is to make the woman drink the water of testing that brings the curse; and the water of testing that brings the curse will go into her. 25 And the priest is to take the sacrifice of jealousy from the woman's hand and present the sacrifice before the Lord, and bring it to the altar. 26 And the priest is to take a handful of the sacrifice as its memorial portion and bring it up on the altar; and after that he is to make the woman drink the water. 27 And if she has been defiled and has kept it altogether from her husband's notice, then the water of testing that brings the curse will go into her, and her belly will swell and her thigh will waste away, and the woman will become a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not been defiled and is clean, then she is cleared, and she will conceive children.

29 This is the law of jealousy, for when a married woman goes astray and is defiled, 30 or when a spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he grows jealous of his wife: he is to set his wife before the Lord, and the priest is to carry out this whole law for her. 31 Then the man will be clear of sin, and that woman will bear her own sin.”
