Leviticus 27
What a Person Is Valued At
1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: When anyone makes a vow setting the value of a soul for the Lord, 3 the value of a male from twenty years old to sixty years old is to be fifty pieces of silver — about a pound and a quarter — by the holy standard. 4 And the value of a female is to be thirty pieces — about twelve ounces. 5 And from five years old to twenty, the value of a male is to be twenty pieces — about eight ounces — and of a female ten pieces, about four ounces. 6 And from a month old to five years old, the value of a male is to be five pieces of silver — about two ounces — and of a female three pieces, about an ounce and a quarter. 7 And from sixty years old and up, if it is a male, the value is to be fifteen pieces of silver — about six ounces — and if a female, ten pieces, about four ounces. 8 And if a man is too poor for the value, he is to stand in front of the priest, and the priest is to set his value. The priest is to set his value by what the hand of the man who made the vow can reach.
Animals, Houses, Fields
9 And if it is from the cattle that may be brought as a gift to the Lord, whatever a man gives of these to the Lord is holy. 10 He is not to change it, a good one for a bad one, or a bad one for a good one; and if he does change it, animal for animal, then both it and its substitute are holy. 11 And if it is any unclean animal, of the kind that is not brought as a gift to the Lord, he is to set the animal in front of the priest, 12 and the priest is to value it, somewhere between good and bad; and however the priest values it, so it stands. 13 And if he does buy it back, he is to add a fifth more to its value.
14 And a man who makes his house holy to the Lord — the priest is to value it, somewhere between good and bad; however the priest values it, so it stands. 15 And if the man who made it holy buys his house back, he is to add a fifth more of the silver of its value to it, and it will be his.
16 And if a man makes part of the field he holds holy to the Lord, the value is to be reckoned by its seed: six bushels of barley seed at fifty pieces of silver — about a pound and a quarter. 17 If he makes his field holy from the year of release, it stands at that value. 18 But if he makes his field holy later, after the release, the priest is to reckon him the silver for the years that are left until the year of release, and it is to be taken off his full valuation. 19 And if the man who made the field holy buys it back, he is to add a fifth more of the silver to its value, and it will be his. 20 And if he does not buy the field back, and sells the field to another man, he can no longer buy it back; 21 but when the release has gone by, the field is holy to the Lord, like land set apart. It becomes the priest’s holding. 22 And if a man makes holy to the Lord a field he has bought, which is not part of the field he holds, 23 the priest is to reckon out for him the full value up to the year of release, and he is to pay the value that day as holy to the Lord; 24 and in the year of release the field goes back to the man he bought it from, whose holding of the land it was. 25 And every valuation is to be by the holy weights: twenty obols to the piece of silver.
Firstborn, Devoted Things, and the Tenth
26 And every firstborn born among your cattle belongs to the Lord, and no one is to make it holy; whether calf or sheep, it is the Lord’s. 27 But if it is one of the unclean four-footed animals, he is to trade it at its value and add a fifth more to it, and it will be his; and if he does not buy it back, it is to be sold at its value. 28 But every thing devoted, which a man devotes to the Lord out of all that is his — whether person or animal, or part of the field he holds — is not to be sold and not to be bought back. Every thing devoted is most holy to the Lord. 29 And anything devoted from among people is not to be bought back; it is certainly to be put to death.
30 Every tenth of the land, from the seed of the land and from the fruit of the trees, belongs to the Lord. It is holy to the Lord. 31 And if a man buys back any of his tenth, he is to add a fifth more to it, and it will be his. 32 And every tenth of oxen and of sheep, and everything that comes by count under the shepherd’s staff — the tenth is to be holy to the Lord. 33 You are not to change a good one for a bad one; and if you do change it, its substitute too is holy. It is not to be bought back.” 34 These are the commands the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel on Mount Sinai.
