Leviticus
Leviticus 26
If You Walk in My Decrees
1 “You are not to make for yourselves things made by hand, or carved images, and you are not to set up a pillar for yourselves, and you are not to put up a stone in your land as a marker, to bow down to it. I am the Lord your God. 2 You are to keep my Sabbaths and hold my holy things in awe. I am the Lord.
3 If you walk in my decrees and keep my commands and do them, 4 then I will give you the rain in its season, and the land will give its crops, and the trees of the fields will give their fruit. 5 And your threshing will run on into the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will run on into the sowing; and you will eat your bread and be full, and you will live safely in your land. 6 And war will not pass through your land, and I will give peace in your land; and you will lie down and no one will frighten you, and I will destroy the dangerous animals out of your land. 7 And you will chase your enemies, and they will fall in front of you in the killing. 8 Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase tens of thousands; and your enemies will fall in front of you by the sword. 9 And I will look on you and make you grow and make you many, and I will set up my covenant with you. 10 And you will eat the old, and the old of the old, and you will clear out the old to make room for the new. 11 And I will set my covenant among you, and my soul will not be sickened by you; 12 and I will walk about among you and be your God, and you will be my people. 13 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you were slaves; and I broke the bar of your yoke and brought you out with your heads up.
But If You Will Not Listen
14 But if you will not listen to me and will not do these decrees of mine, 15 but refuse them, and your soul is sickened by my judgments, so that you do not do all my commands and so break my covenant, 16 then this is what I will do to you: I will set on you bewilderment, and the itch, and jaundice, and eyes that rot away, and a life that wastes away; and you will sow your seed for nothing, and your enemies will eat it. 17 And I will set my face against you, and you will fall in front of your enemies, and those who hate you will chase you; and you will run when nobody is chasing you.
18 And if even after this you will not listen to me, I will go on to train you seven times over for your sins. 19 And I will break the insolence of your pride, and I will make your sky iron and your ground like bronze. 20 And your strength will be spent for nothing, and your land will not give its seed, and the trees of your field will not give their fruit.
21 And if after that you walk crookedly and are not willing to listen to me, I will bring seven blows more on you, to match your sins. 22 And I will send the wild animals of the land against you, and they will eat you and use up your cattle and make you few; and your roads will go empty.
23 And if even by this you are not trained, but walk crookedly toward me, 24 then I too will walk crookedly with you, in anger, and I too will strike you seven times over for your sins. 25 And I will bring a sword on you that avenges the case of the covenant, and you will run for shelter to your cities; and I will send death out against you, and you will be handed over into the hands of enemies. 26 When I press you with a shortage of bread, ten women will bake your loaves in one oven and give your loaves back to you by weight; and you will eat and not be filled.
27 And if even after this you will not listen to me, but walk crookedly toward me, 28 then I myself will walk crookedly with you, in anger, and I myself will train you seven times over, to match your sins. 29 And you will eat the flesh of your sons, and you will eat the flesh of your daughters. 30 And I will lay your pillars waste and destroy your wooden things made by hand, and I will lay your corpses on the corpses of your idols; and my soul will be sickened by you. 31 And I will lay your cities waste and make your holy places empty, and I will not smell the smell of your sacrifices. 32 And I myself will lay your land waste, and your enemies who settle in it will be astonished at it. 33 And I will scatter you among the nations, and the sword will come after you and use you up; and your land will be empty and your cities will be empty.
The Land Takes Back Its Sabbaths
34 Then the land will take pleasure in its Sabbaths, all the days it lies empty, while you are in the land of your enemies. Then the land will keep Sabbath and take pleasure in its Sabbaths. 35 All the days it lies empty it will keep the Sabbaths it did not keep during your Sabbaths, while you were living on it. 36 And on those of you who are left I will bring dread into their hearts in the land of their enemies, and the sound of a blown leaf will chase them; and they will run as men run from a war, and they will fall when nobody is chasing them. 37 And brother will overlook brother as in a war, though nobody is running them down; and you will not be able to stand up to your enemies. 38 And you will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will eat you up. 39 And those of you who are left will waste away because of your sins; in the land of their enemies they will melt away.
And Yet I Will Remember
40 And they will speak out openly their own sins and the sins of their fathers — that they went astray and overlooked me, and that they walked crookedly in front of me, 41 and that I walked crookedly with them, in anger, and destroyed them in the land of their enemies. Then their uncircumcised heart will be put to shame, and then they will take their sins as their own. 42 And I will remember the covenant of Jacob, and the covenant of Isaac, and the covenant of Abraham I will remember; and I will remember the land. 43 And the land will be left behind by them; then the land will welcome its Sabbaths while it lies empty because of them, and they will take their own lawless deeds as their own, because they overlooked my judgments and their soul was sickened by my decrees. 44 And even so, while they were in the land of their enemies, I did not overlook them and I was not so sickened by them as to use them up and break my covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God. 45 And I will remember for them the earlier covenant, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, in front of the nations, to be their God. I am the Lord.” 46 These are the judgments and the decrees and the law that the Lord gave between himself and the children of Israel on Mount Sinai, by the hand of Moses.
