Leviticus 24

The Lamp and the Loaves

1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2 “Charge the children of Israel to bring me pure beaten olive oil for the light, to keep a lamp burning without stopping, 3 outside the veil in the tent of witness. Aaron and his sons are to keep it burning from evening until morning before the Lord, without a break. This is a lasting practice through your generations. 4 You are to keep the lamps burning on the pure lampstand before the Lord until morning.

5 And you are to take fine flour and make twelve loaves of it; each loaf is to be of four quarts. 6 And you are to set them out in two rows, six loaves to a row, on the pure table before the Lord. 7 And you are to put pure frankincense and salt on each row, and they will be loaves set out before the Lord as a reminder. 8 On the Sabbath day they are to be set out before the Lord without fail, on behalf of the children of Israel — a lasting covenant. 9 And they belong to Aaron and his sons, and they are to eat them in a holy place; for this is his most holy portion out of what is sacrificed to the Lord. This is a lasting practice.”

The Man Who Named the Name

10 And the son of an Israelite woman went out among the children of Israel — he was the son of an Egyptian man — and he and an Israelite man fought each other in the camp; 11 and the son of the Israelite woman named the Name and cursed. So they brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith, daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. 12 And they put him under guard, for him to be judged by a decree from the Lord. 13 And the Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 14 “Take the man who cursed outside the camp, and everyone who heard him is to lay their hands on his head, and the whole gathering is to stone him. 15 And speak to the children of Israel and say to them: Anyone who curses God will bear the sin; 16 and whoever names the name of the Lord is certainly to be put to death. The whole gathering of Israel is to stone him with stones — newcomer or native-born alike. For naming the name of the Lord he is to die.

One Judgment for Everyone

17 And a man who strikes the life of a person so that he dies is certainly to be put to death. 18 And whoever strikes an animal so that it dies is to pay life for life. 19 And if anyone puts a blemish on his neighbor, as he did to him, so it is to be done back to him: 20 break for break, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Whatever blemish he puts on a man, that is what is to be given back to him. 21 Whoever strikes a person so that he dies is certainly to be put to death. 22 There is to be one and the same judgment for the newcomer and for the one born in the land; for I am the Lord your God.” 23 And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and they took the man who had cursed outside the camp and stoned him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the Lord had commanded Moses.
