Leviticus 23

The Feasts of the Lord

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: The feasts of the Lord, which you are to call holy days you are called to — these are my feasts. 3 Six days you are to do your work, and on the seventh day is a Sabbath, a rest, a holy day you are called to before the Lord. You are not to do any work at all. It is a Sabbath to the Lord in every place you live. 4 These are the feasts to the Lord, holy days you are called to, which you are to call at their appointed times.

Passover and the Bread Without Yeast

5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, is the Lord’s Passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of this month is the Feast of Bread Without Yeast to the Lord; seven days you are to eat bread without yeast. 7 And the first day is to be a holy day you are called to; you are to do no ordinary work. 8 And you are to bring whole burnt offerings to the Lord for seven days; and the seventh day is to be a holy day you are called to; you are to do no ordinary work.”

The First Sheaf

9 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 10 “Say to the children of Israel: When you come into the land I am giving you and you reap its harvest, you are to bring a sheaf, the firstfruits of your harvest, to the priest; 11 and he is to lift the sheaf up before the Lord, to be accepted for you. On the day after the first day the priest is to lift it up. 12 And on the day you bring the sheaf you are to make a year-old sheep without blemish a whole burnt offering to the Lord, 13 and with it a sacrifice of four quarts of fine flour worked with oil — a sacrifice to the Lord, a pleasing smell to the Lord — and a quart of wine poured out with it. 14 And you are not to eat bread or roasted new grain until this same day, until you have brought the gifts to your God. This is a lasting practice through your generations, in every place you live.

Fifty Days Later

15 And you are to count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day you bring the sheaf that is set before the Lord, seven whole weeks; 16 up to the day after the last week you are to count fifty days, and then bring a new sacrifice to the Lord. 17 From where you live you are to bring loaves to be set before the Lord, two loaves; they are to be of four quarts of fine flour, baked with yeast, from the first of the harvest, for the Lord. 18 And with the loaves you are to bring seven year-old lambs without blemish, and one young bull from the herd, and two rams without blemish — they are to be a whole burnt offering to the Lord — with their sacrifices and their drink offerings, a sacrifice of a pleasing smell to the Lord. 19 And they are to make one male goat from the goats for the sin, and two year-old lambs for a sacrifice of well-being, along with the loaves of the first of the harvest. 20 And the priest is to set them, with the loaves of the first of the harvest, before the Lord, along with the two lambs. They will be holy to the Lord; they belong to the priest who brings them. 21 And you are to call this day a day you are called to; it is to be holy to you, and you are to do no ordinary work on it. This is a lasting practice through your generations, in every place you live. 22 And when you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to finish reaping what is left in your field as you reap, and you are not to gather up what falls from your reaping. You are to leave it for the needy man and for the newcomer. I am the Lord your God.”

The Seventh Month

23 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 24 “Speak to the children of Israel: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you are to have a rest, a memorial of trumpets. It is to be a holy day you are called to. 25 You are to do no ordinary work, and you are to bring a whole burnt offering to the Lord.”

26 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 27 “And on the tenth day of this seventh month is a day of atonement. It is to be a holy day you are called to, and you are to humble your souls and bring a whole burnt offering to the Lord. 28 You are to do no work at all on this same day, for it is a day of atonement for you, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 Every soul who is not humbled on this same day will be destroyed from among his people. 30 And every soul who does work on this same day — that soul will perish from among his people. 31 You are to do no work at all. This is a lasting practice through your generations, in every place you live. 32 It is to be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you are to humble your souls. From the ninth day of the month, from evening to evening, you are to keep your Sabbath.”

The Feast of Tents

33 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 34 “Speak to the children of Israel: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month there is a Feast of Tents to the Lord, for seven days. 35 And the first day is a holy day you are called to; you are to do no ordinary work. 36 For seven days you are to bring whole burnt offerings to the Lord; and the eighth day is to be a holy day you are called to, and you are to bring whole burnt offerings to the Lord. It is the closing day; you are to do no ordinary work. 37 These are the feasts of the Lord, which you are to call holy days you are called to, for bringing altar offerings to the Lord — whole burnt offerings and their sacrifices and their drink offerings, each on its own day — 38 besides the Lord’s Sabbaths, and besides your gifts, and besides all your vows, and besides everything you give to the Lord of your own choice.

39 And on the fifteenth day of this seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you are to keep a feast to the Lord for seven days. On the first day there is a rest, and on the eighth day a rest. 40 And on the first day you are to take good fruit from the trees, and palm fronds, and leafy branches from the trees, and willows, and branches of the chaste tree from the streambed, and be glad before the Lord your God for seven days 41 in the year. This is a lasting practice through your generations; in the seventh month you are to keep it. 42 You are to live in tents for seven days. Everyone born in Israel is to live in tents, 43 so that your generations may see that I settled the children of Israel in tents when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.” 44 And Moses told the feasts of the Lord to the children of Israel.
