Genesis 22
The Testing of Abraham
1 After these things, God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Look — here I am.” 2 And he said, “Take your son, the beloved one, whom you have loved — Isaac — and go into the high land, and offer him there as a whole burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will tell you of.” 3 So Abraham rose in the morning and saddled his donkey. He took with him two servants and his son Isaac, and when he had split wood for the whole burnt offering, he rose and set out, and came to the place God had told him of. 4 On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place far off. 5 And Abraham said to his servants, “Sit here with the donkey. I and the boy will go on over there, and when we have worshiped, we will return to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood of the whole burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he took in his own hands the fire and the knife, and the two of them went on together. 7 And Isaac said to Abraham his father, “Father.” And he said, “What is it, son?” And he said, “Look — the fire and the wood. But where is the sheep for the whole burnt offering?” 8 And Abraham said, “God will see to a sheep for himself for the whole burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together, 9 and came to the place God had told him of. There Abraham built an altar and laid the wood on it. And he bound the feet of his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand to take the knife, to slay his son.
11 But a messenger of the Lord called to him out of heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Look — here I am.” 12 And he said, “Do not lay your hand on the child, and do nothing to him. For now I know that you fear God — for my sake, you have not spared your beloved son.” 13 Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked — and there was a ram, caught by its horns in a sabek plant. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up as a whole burnt offering in the place of his son Isaac. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Has Seen — so that people say to this day, “On the mountain the Lord was seen.” 15 And the messenger of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 saying, “I have sworn by myself, says the Lord: because you have done this thing, and for my sake have not spared your beloved son, 17 in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your seed like the stars of heaven and like the sand on the shore of the sea, and your seed will inherit the cities of their enemies. 18 And in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed — because you listened to my voice.” 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they rose and went together to the Well of the Oath. And Abraham lived at the Well of the Oath.
Nahor’s Family
20 After these things, it was reported to Abraham that Milcah herself had also borne sons to his brother Nahor: 21 Uz the firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of the Syrians, 22 and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. 23 And Bethuel fathered Rebekah. These are the eight sons that Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore sons: Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.
