Leviticus
Leviticus 19
You Are to Be Holy
1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2 “Speak to the gathering of the children of Israel and say to them: You are to be holy, because I, the Lord your God, am holy. 3 Every one of you is to revere his father and his mother, and you are to keep my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God. 4 You are not to follow after idols, and you are not to make cast metal gods for yourselves. I am the Lord your God.
5 And when you sacrifice a sacrifice of well-being to the Lord, sacrifice it so that it is accepted for you. 6 It is to be eaten on the day you sacrifice it and on the next day; and if any is left over to the third day, it is to be burned up with fire. 7 And if it is eaten at all on the third day, it is unfit for sacrifice; it will not be accepted. 8 And the one who eats it will bear the sin, because he has treated the holy things of the Lord as common; and the souls who eat it will be destroyed from among their people.
The Corners of the Field
9 And when you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to finish reaping your field right to the edge, and you are not to gather up what falls from your reaping. 10 And you are not to go back over your vineyard, and you are not to gather the grapes left in your vineyard. You are to leave them for the needy man and for the newcomer. I am the Lord your God.
How to Live with People
11 You are not to steal. You are not to lie. No one is to bring a false charge against his neighbor. 12 And you are not to swear falsely by my name, and you are not to treat the name of your God as common. I am the Lord your God. 13 You are not to wrong your neighbor and you are not to rob him, and a hired man’s wages are not to stay the night with you until morning. 14 You are not to speak evil of a deaf man, and you are not to put a stumbling block in front of a blind man; you are to fear the Lord your God. I am the Lord your God. 15 You are not to do what is unjust in a judgment. You are not to favor the face of a needy man, and you are not to be impressed by the face of a powerful man; you are to judge your neighbor in righteousness. 16 You are not to go about among your people with deceit; you are not to stand up against your neighbor’s blood. I am the Lord your God. 17 You are not to hate your brother in your mind. You are certainly to correct your neighbor, and so you will not take on sin because of him. 18 And your hand is not to take revenge, and you are not to hold a grudge against the children of your people; and you are to love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.
19 You are to keep my law. You are not to mate your cattle with a different kind, and you are not to sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, and you are not to put on yourself a garment woven of two different materials.
20 And if a man lies with a woman in a flow of seed, and she is a household servant promised to a man and has not been bought back with a ransom and has not been given her freedom, there is to be an inquiry into them. They are not to die, because she had not been set free. 21 And he is to bring for his wrongdoing to the Lord, to the door of the tent of witness, a ram for the wrongdoing. 22 And the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram of the wrongdoing before the Lord, for the sin he has sinned; and the sin he sinned will be forgiven him.
Trees, Omens, and the Body
23 And when you come into the land the Lord your God is giving you and you plant any tree that bears food, you are to clear away its uncleanness. Its fruit will be uncleared for you for three years; it is not to be eaten. 24 And in the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, a thing of praise to the Lord. 25 And in the fifth year you may eat the fruit; its produce is an increase to you. I am the Lord your God.
26 Do not eat on the mountains, and you are not to read omens or watch birds for signs. 27 You are not to make a rounded cut in the hair of your head, and you are not to spoil the edge of your beard. 28 And you are not to make cuts in your body for a dead person, and you are not to make marks pricked into your skin. I am the Lord your God. 29 You are not to treat your daughter as common by making a prostitute of her, so that the land does not go whoring and the land is not filled with lawlessness. 30 You are to keep my Sabbaths and hold my holy things in awe. I am the Lord. 31 You are not to follow after mediums, and you are not to attach yourselves to chanters, defiling yourselves with them. I am the Lord your God.
The Old Man, the Newcomer, the Scales
32 You are to rise up before a gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you are to fear your God. I am the Lord your God. 33 And if a newcomer comes to you in your land, you are not to press him down. 34 The newcomer who comes to you is to be among you like the native-born, and you are to love him as yourself; for you were newcomers in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
35 You are not to do what is unjust in a judgment, or in measures, or in weights, or in scales. 36 You are to have honest scales and honest weights and an honest measure. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. 37 And you are to keep all my law and all my decrees, and do them. I am the Lord your God.”
