Leviticus 14

The Two Birds

1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2 “This is the law for the person who has leprosy, on the day he is made clean. He is to be brought to the priest, 3 and the priest is to go outside the camp, and the priest is to look, and if the mark of the leprosy is healed and gone from him, 4 then the priest is to give the order, and they are to take for the man being made clean two live clean birds, and cedar wood, and spun scarlet yarn, and hyssop. 5 The priest is to give the order, and they are to kill one of the birds over a clay pot, over running water. 6 As for the living bird, he is to take it, with the cedar wood and the spun scarlet and the hyssop, and dip them and the living bird into the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water. 7 He is to sprinkle it seven times over the man being made clean of his leprosy, and he will be clean; and he is to let the living bird go into the open country. 8 And the man who has been made clean is to wash his clothes and shave off all his hair and bathe in water, and he will be clean. After that he may come into the camp, but he is to stay outside his own house for seven days. 9 And on the seventh day he is to shave off all his hair — his head and his beard and his eyebrows; all his hair he is to shave off — and he is to wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and he will be clean.

The Eighth Day

10 And on the eighth day he is to take two year-old lambs without blemish, and one year-old sheep without blemish, and six quarts of fine flour kneaded with oil for a sacrifice, and half a pint of olive oil. 11 And the priest who is making him clean is to set the man being made clean, and these things with him, before the Lord at the door of the tent of witness. 12 The priest is to take the one lamb and bring it for the wrongdoing, along with the half pint of oil, and set them apart as a portion set apart before the Lord. 13 They are to kill the lamb in the place where the whole burnt offerings and the offerings for sin are killed, in a holy place; for the offering for sin is like the offering for wrongdoing — it belongs to the priest, it is most holy. 14 The priest is to take some of the blood of the offering for wrongdoing, and the priest is to put it on the lobe of the right ear of the man being made clean, and on the tip of his right hand, and on the tip of his right foot. 15 The priest is to take some of the half pint of oil and pour it onto his own left hand, 16 and he is to dip his right finger in the oil that is on his left hand and sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. 17 And the oil left in his hand the priest is to put on the lobe of the right ear of the man being made clean, and on the tip of his right hand, and on the tip of his right foot, on top of the blood of the offering for wrongdoing. 18 And the oil left on the priest’s hand the priest is to put on the head of the man who has been made clean, and the priest is to make atonement for him before the Lord. 19 The priest is to make the offering for sin, and the priest is to make atonement for the unclean man who is being made clean, from his sin; and after that the priest is to kill the whole burnt offering. 20 The priest is to bring the whole burnt offering and the sacrifice up on the altar before the Lord, and the priest is to make atonement for him, and he will be clean.

If He Is Poor

21 And if he is poor and his hand cannot reach so far, he is to take one lamb for the wrong he did, as a portion set apart, so that atonement may be made for him, and two quarts of fine flour kneaded with oil for a sacrifice, and half a pint of olive oil, 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whatever he can afford; and one is to be for the sin and one for a whole burnt offering. 23 He is to bring them on the eighth day, for his cleansing, to the priest, at the door of the tent of witness before the Lord. 24 The priest is to take the lamb of the offering for wrongdoing and the half pint of oil and set them as what is set before the Lord. 25 He is to kill the lamb of the offering for wrongdoing, and the priest is to take some of the blood of the offering for wrongdoing and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the man being made clean, and on the tip of his right hand, and on the tip of his right foot. 26 And the priest is to pour some of the oil onto his own left hand, 27 and the priest is to sprinkle with his right finger some of the oil that is on his left hand seven times before the Lord. 28 And the priest is to put some of the oil that is on his hand on the lobe of the right ear of the man being made clean, and on the tip of his right hand, and on the tip of his right foot, on top of the blood of the offering for wrongdoing. 29 And what is left of the oil on the priest’s hand he is to put on the head of the man who has been made clean, and the priest is to make atonement for him before the Lord. 30 And he is to offer one of the turtledoves or of the young pigeons, whatever he could afford, 31 the one for the sin and the one for a whole burnt offering, along with the sacrifice; and the priest is to make atonement for the man being made clean, before the Lord. 32 This is the law for the man who has a mark of leprosy and whose hand cannot reach to what his cleansing costs.”

Leprosy in a House

33 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, 34 “When you come into the land of the Canaanites, which I am giving you to hold, and I put a mark of leprosy in a house in the land you have come to hold, 35 then the man the house belongs to is to come and tell the priest, ‘Something like a mark has appeared to me in the house.’ 36 And the priest is to give orders to clear out the house before the priest goes in to look at the mark, so that nothing in the house becomes unclean; and after that the priest is to go in and study the house. 37 He is to look at the mark on the walls of the house, and if there are greenish or reddish hollows in them, and they look lower than the wall, 38 then the priest is to come out of the house to the door of the house, and the priest is to shut the house up for seven days. 39 And the priest is to come back on the seventh day and look at the house, and if the mark has not spread in the walls of the house, 40 then the priest is to give orders, and they are to take out the stones the mark is in and throw them outside the city, into an unclean place. 41 And they are to scrape the house all around inside, and pour the scraped dust outside the city, into an unclean place. 42 And they are to take other scraped stones and set them in place of the first stones, and take other plaster and plaster the house.

43 And if the mark comes back and springs up in the house after the stones have been taken out and after the house has been scraped and after it has been plastered, 44 then the priest is to go in and look; and if the mark has spread in the house, it is a settled leprosy in the house. It is unclean. 45 And they are to pull the house down — its timbers and its stones — and carry all the plaster dust outside the city, into an unclean place. 46 And whoever goes into the house on any of the days it is shut up will be unclean until evening; 47 and whoever sleeps in the house is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening; and whoever eats in the house is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.

48 But if the priest comes and goes in and looks, and the mark has not spread at all in the house after the house has been plastered, then the priest is to declare the house clean, because the mark is healed. 49 And to make the house clean he is to take two live clean birds, and cedar wood, and spun scarlet yarn, and hyssop. 50 He is to kill one of the birds over a clay pot, over running water, 51 and he is to take the cedar wood and the spun scarlet and the hyssop and the living bird, and dip it into the blood of the killed bird over the running water, and with them sprinkle the house seven times; 52 and he is to make the house clean with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the spun scarlet. 53 And he is to let the living bird go outside the city into the open country, and make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.

54 This is the law for every mark of leprosy and for a scaly patch, 55 and for leprosy in a garment and in a house, 56 and for a scar and a marking and a bright patch, 57 and for making plain on what day a thing is unclean and on what day it is to be made clean. This is the law of leprosy.”
