Leviticus 11

Animals of the Land

1 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and say: These are the animals you may eat, out of all the animals on the earth. 3 Every animal with a split hoof, divided into two claws, that also chews the cud — these you may eat. 4 But these you are not to eat, out of those that chew the cud and out of those with split hoofs and divided claws: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not have a split hoof. It is unclean to you. 5 And the hare, because it chews the cud but does not have a split hoof. It is unclean to you. 6 And the rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not have a split hoof. It is unclean to you. 7 And the pig, because it does have a split hoof and makes claws of the hoof, but it does not chew the cud. It is unclean to you. 8 You are not to eat their meat, and you are not to touch their carcasses. These are unclean to you.

Creatures of the Water

9 And these you may eat of all that live in the waters: everything that has fins and scales, in the waters and in the seas and in the streams — these you may eat. 10 But everything without fins and scales, in the water or in the seas or in the streams, out of all that the waters bring forth, and out of every living soul in the water — it is a detestable thing. 11 They are to be detestable to you: you are not to eat their meat, and you are to detest their carcasses. 12 Everything in the water without fins and scales is a detestable thing to you.

Birds, and the Creatures That Fly

13 And these you are to detest among the birds; they are not to be eaten, they are detestable: the eagle, the griffon vulture, and the sea eagle, 14 the vulture, and the kite and its kind, 15 and the raven and its kind, 16 and the ostrich, and the owl, and the gull and its kind, and the hawk and its kind, 17 and the night raven, and the cormorant, and the ibis, 18 and the swamphen, and the pelican, and the swan, 19 and the owl, and the heron, and the plover and its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

20 And all the crawling creatures that fly, which go on four feet, are detestable to you. 21 But these you may eat of the crawling creatures that fly and go on four feet: the ones that have jointed legs above their feet, for leaping with on the ground. 22 And these of them you may eat: the young locust and its kind, the long-horned locust and its kind, the locust and its kind, and the cricket and its kind. 23 Every crawling creature that flies and has four feet is detestable to you.

Touching a Dead Body

24 And by these you will be defiled. Anyone who touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening, 25 and anyone who picks up any of their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. 26 Among all the animals, any that has a split hoof and makes claws but does not chew the cud will be unclean to you. Anyone who touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening. 27 And every one that walks on its paws, among all the wild animals that go on four feet, will be unclean to you. Anyone who touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening, 28 and the one who picks up any of their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. These are unclean to you.

29 And these are unclean to you among the creatures that crawl on the ground: the weasel, and the mouse, and the land crocodile, 30 the shrew, and the chameleon, and the gecko, and the lizard, and the mole. 31 These are unclean to you out of all the crawling creatures on the ground. Anyone who touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.

What a Dead Body Touches

32 And anything one of them falls on when it is dead will be unclean — any wooden vessel, or clothing, or hide, or sack. Every vessel that work is done in is to be dipped in water, and it will be unclean until evening, and then it will be clean. 33 And any clay pot one of them falls into — whatever is inside it will be unclean, and the pot itself is to be broken. 34 And any food that is eaten which such water has come onto will be unclean; and any drink that is drunk, in any container, will be unclean. 35 And anything one of their carcasses falls on will be unclean. Ovens and pot-stands are to be pulled down. They are unclean, and they will be unclean to you. 36 Only springs of water, and a cistern, and a gathering of water will stay clean; but whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean. 37 And if one of their carcasses falls on any seed for sowing that is to be sown, it stays clean; 38 but if water has been poured on the seed and one of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean to you.

39 And if one of the animals you are allowed to eat dies, whoever touches its carcass will be unclean until evening; 40 and whoever eats any of that carcass is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening; and whoever picks up any of that carcass is to wash his clothes and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening.

Be Holy, Because I Am Holy

41 And every crawling creature that crawls on the ground is to be a detestable thing to you. It is not to be eaten. 42 Anything that goes on its belly, and anything that goes on four feet all its life, and anything with many feet, among all the crawling creatures that crawl on the ground — you are not to eat it, because it is detestable to you. 43 You are not to make your own souls detestable with any of the crawling creatures that crawl on the ground; you are not to be defiled by them, and you are not to become unclean through them. 44 For I am the Lord your God. You are to be made holy and you are to be holy, because I, the Lord your God, am holy; and you are not to defile your souls with any of the crawling creatures that move on the ground. 45 For I am the Lord who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God, and you are to be holy, because I, the Lord, am holy.

46 This is the law about the animals and the birds and every living soul that moves in the water and every living soul that crawls on the ground, 47 so as to separate between the unclean and the clean, and between the living creatures that may be eaten and the living creatures that may not be eaten.”
